Posted by CURLY BILL on Tuesday, February 2, 2010

TRYIN OUT SOME TUNES THAT REQUIRE PLAYIN CHORDS, DRONES, AND DS. I DONT KNOW IF MY FIDDLE IS SET UP FOR THIS. I JUST KNOW I DONT WANT TO JUST PLAY SINGLE STRING SONGS. I AM TRYING SLIGHT PRESSURE, NO PRESSURE, AND ALL I AM GETTING IS HARSH NOISES. WHO KNOW I MIGHT NEED SOME DIFFERENT STRINGS. JUST BLOGGING WHATS ON MY MIND AT THE TIME. STILL HAVIN LOADS OF FUN IN THE PROCESS.

Keep at it. Those were my thoughts too and everyone kept telling me 'keep at it'. So I would for a while, then get frustrated and stop for a while ... then go back ... then step away ... and on and on. It'll come, and your set up won't matter. Once you get the feel, you'll be able to do it on 'bout any fiddle. It was tough for me for a long time, but now it's pretty much second nature.

Fiddlerdi has a 'learners' version of Angeline the Baker that I cut my teeth on with drones. That's where I started. Worth a visit and a try, I think.

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is to think they need to put a whole lot more pressure on the bow when they're playing two strings, which gives you that squawky messy sound that's worse than cats fighting. You don't need more, you just need the exact right angle so that your bow is applying pressure to both strings. Once you get better at that, then you can even vary up the pressure depending on which string is carrying the melody, and emphasize that one just a bit more.

Have fun!

man is that all good stuff to know. I've been at it only 4 months and trying Boil Them Cabbage Down. I'm having tough time because I stayed away from two string tunes so I could just learn to play. After three practices I'm getting hang of it, but is that "exact right angle" every hard to get let alone keep up. Thanks for the wisdom. We beginners need this kind of mentoring.

I should say also, that I've not been playing that long, so my advice is certainly not expert. It's my experience, though.
