The fingerboard tape is off!
Now I'm really sounding lousy. For the most part , when I'm off, I notice it and adjust my finger slightly till it sounds better. It is quite difficult to not have the lines as guides. You also start thinking about your fingering more and then your bowing falls apart.
It is a leap forward but feels more like 4 steps back. But I feel so grown up now! Like taking your training wheels off.

I never used the tape, but I'm thinking give yourself a week or 2 and your fingers will remember with out hesitation.

CONGRATS! Yes, it is a leap forward. Now you have to use your ears. Try playing your scales with your eyes closed. Slowly. You'll be surprised how you can hear the difference between the "ringing" right tone, and the slightly off and unringing not quite right tone.

Thanks folks. I can see how long slow scales are important more than ever. I can notice the ring of sound when you finger the D note on the A string and it rings with the D string. But right now I can only detect it when I am mechanically searching for it. It and other "ringing" sounds are not intuitive yet but I understand it will come with time, practice and ear development so I look forward to better and better intonation.
"Luke, feel the force around you" Oh god that poor banjo
