Yesterday's lesson was a let down for me. Not my teacher's fault, just another realization of how far I have to go.
First off I need to get over my "performance issues" when playing for my teacher. It never comes off as good as when I play in the cellar by myself. I wish that my teacher could really see me in my best form. I try to get there a few minutes early so I can play a scale or two while waiting for her to finish the previous lesson.
I thought I had the wrist somewhat going on the 8th note thing but alas..not. One thing that was obvious to her was that my bow hold was too loose when trying to flutter the wrist and the bow keeps moving in my hand. So spent most of the lesson going over that slight spot between gripping too hard and yet with enough force to maintain your grip. I also tend to just hang my forefinger over the bow and not arc it a bit so your kinda hooking it. My hand looks like I'm pointing when I bow. So the instructions are to work on holding the bow again and even walking around holding a pencil in the bow position and manipulate the hand and wrist around while maintaining the hold. "Get this first and don't worry about the wrist, it will come. Don't force the motion, it won't be natural. " Yes, but when Pam, when will it come???? argh
That compounded by my poor left hand position and my sucky, weak pinky. Trying to play Johnny Cope and having difficulty at the point where you play the F# on the E string and the D on the A string at the same time. That is tough. I am not giving my hand enough room and killing my forefinger in crimping it to finger its note. Got to move the hand back towards the nut more. Then there is keeping the pinky up above the fingerboard when using the ring finger and not all contorted below the fingerboard where it likes to hide.
I'll take it all in stride. You know, I am aware that it's all about the journey. However, in comparing it to a journey, it would be nice to finish packing so I can at least hit the open road. Since getting there is the end of the trip, I just say that I like going for a ride.
At least we had a snow day today so I don't have to drive to work.

Dont get down. We all go thru our ups and downs. I start playing like I am king of the world, then it never fails the next night I play terrible. I bet you will find that you change the bow grip many times before you find one that you can settle on. Just remember you may think you stink, but every time you play you brain is figuring things out, so dont ever give up!
