pufling and Quebecois tunes

Posted by brian bishop on Friday, January 15, 2010

Taking a break from todays work which is putting in the purfling on my #141 viola and 142 violin.  Being kept company by tunes from Joseph Allard, Grand Violoneux, Hommage.  Cam 105.2  Great reissue cd of this super influential Quebecois fiddler. He is so smooth and has such a sweet tone.  I've learned many of the tunes off this cd but they are deceptively simple and I find trying to capture his phrasing and the clarity of his melodic lines very challenging.

There is a companion book available with most of the tunes from the cd as well as a few others.  Most of the tunes seem fairly easy to adapt to different fiddle styles so I recommend it to people who want to add a few Quebecois tunes to their repertoire.

I've played many of these tunes for Contra dances with the Top Drawer String Band. I think there is only one crooked tune on the cd so if you want that kind of thing it's not on this cd.

Tonight, Solas is playing at the 10lb. Fiddle and I'm looking forward to hearing some great Irish tunes.

Well, breaks over so it's back to the work bench, slaving over a hot bending iron!
