I cut a chuck of my thumb off yesterday. Yes, my right thumb. Right in the spot where you press on the bow. No, it wasn't on purpose. I was slicing left over steak and had at my thumb with the steak knife. So it's all wrapped up now and pretty impossible to hold a bow (I've tried). I'm hoping to be down to a band aid in a couple days, but I'm screwed for now.
On a better note, I've been checking out some youtube vids of jams at Clifftop, WV. That would be so cool to go for a few days. To hang out, camp, walk around and play with folks from jam to jam. To get the chance to meet or even play a tune with a great like Benton Flippen, Lester McCumbers or such. I have it on my list of possibilities.

Bummer - hope it heals up ok...
Sometimes these "forced" absences from practice can be useful because there's not much to do but sit back, take stock and look around.
Sounds like this is working for you since I'm guessing you'll be at Clifftop next year... ;-)

There are other fiddle camps closer to you, though Clifftop is certainly one to aspire to--
Harry Smith Frolic
Black Creek Fiddler's Reunion
Lake Genero
Maine Fiddle Camp
Fiddles on the Tobique

Sorry to hear about your accident, Stew. You were cutting left handed, but you fiddle righty? Not that it really matters, but inquiring minds want to know.

You MIGHT want to give the TUF hold a try at this point- the normal hold
uses the thumb-tip more, the TUF hold halfway down the pad to the first joint.
Of course, if the cut is long and deep enough, that might not work either.

Yep, I'm a lefty who plays banjo and now fiddle righty. It came quite natural for banjo and is comfortable for fiddle also. I do use a knife lefty but obviously not too well. I was able to practice today but barely an hour before the thumb started to ache.
I'll check out the TUF hold. I read about it before but didn't know if there were any videos showing it.
I am planning on going to the maine fiddle camp also, even if its just for the weekend session. My teacher is one of the instructors there.

Make sure if you go to Maine Fiddle Camp you hook up with Art Bryan. He's usually instructing there, and is one of my fave OT players.
