I found a new fiddle. She is very old, maybe mid-1800s, and very unpretentious. A painted, flaking fingerboard, penciled-on purfling, crusty, splotchy old red varnish, a slightly lopsided body, and numerous old cracks, patches, and repairs covering the top. I think she is gorgeous, but I love old worn things.
Her sound makes me shiver, it is so beautiful and different from my other fiddles. It is loud, rich, dark, layered, and velvety. The low notes are especially sublime. I have had her for four days, and I can't stop playing her. I feel like I may have finally found the sound I have been searching for in a fiddle. My bow grip has relaxed due to the more responsive, louder tone. I'm still getting used to all the quirks and new bridge angle, and I need to find a better E string, but overall I'm very happy. In fact, this is sort of a problem since I have a lot of work I'm supposed to be getting done this week :)
I added two photos of her to my album.

Congratulations! How exciting. I hope the two of you make beautiful music. I have an 1800's one myself, how sounds like you described. Must be something about those old brawds. ;)

I highly recommend th Oliv Gold E... I've heard no other E string that compares.... if you search for "E string" here in the forum you'll find long, and good discussions of E strings... happy for you with your new fiddle.. I know what it's like to play an instrument that's that pleasing... hard to stop...

There's nothing that compares to playing a wonderful instrument! Congrats! Ya know though, thats the thing about work. It'll never go away or be finished. It will ALWAYS be waiting for you.

OK, so where/how did you find it? This story needs some details!
And when are you going to show up again at the Oro Valley Library jam? Next one is Nov-20. Bring that fiddle. And bring MJ.
