Well, I went and did it. Bought a Recording King "california deluxe" open back 5-string banjo. All I have to say is that the fingerpicking and even mandolin picking is kinda conflicting w/the clawhammer learning. But it's a decent banjo and will be fun to learn. Left hand's not bad and as long as I'm only using the index finger, the right hand claw isn't bad. But getting the thumb in on the shuffle is tripping me up. It'll happen, but this is the first one of these instruments that I'm truly feeling awkward with. I'm actually reading Dan Levenson's book about it, which again is a first.
I also got some new nice Stewart MacDonald Five-Star tuners for my 4-string old Vega tenor openback banjo and installed them myself Friday night. Now, I can hold the Irish tenor tuning. Man, these tuners are great and work well. This thing is FUN and sounds good. Loud!

Congrats on the new banjo. Yeah, frailing/clawhammer is tough!

It always gives me a feeling of joy when I hear someone picks up the banjo. Sweet!
