Will Play for FOOD

Posted by David M. on Thursday, October 8, 2009

Got a gig tonight w/my buddy Marc at a pizza place here in town.  Port City Underground (www.portcitypizzas.com).

It was funny when the terms were being discussed:  yes, they'll pay us and give us a pizza; and also an AGREED UPON number of beers each...   We had asked for beer and food.  So, no open bar tab for us tonight, but that's OK since we're playin' and all.  Good food at this place.  Should be fun.  There's a baby grand piano in the room.  Too bad I can't play that.

Enough beers and you can play that ole baby grand. Convincing the rest of the patrons that you can is another story.

Enjoy

Come ON, Dave! You're holdin' out on us with that "ageed upon number of beers each". I played a bar in Texas, where each man could have 4 Lonestars or 2 "fancy" brands. I knew a lot of Texan's who would chuckle when I'd show up somewhere with Lonestar ( kinda like PBR in New England). I love good beer as much as the next guy, but when I'm gonna be jammin' and sweatin' all night, make mine cheap beer!

I don't drink beer when I play. I do LOVE it when the people who are listening have had a few though. They tend to like my playing better then!

Well, we ended up 2 each. She made sure to let us know after the 2nd one that it was our last free one :) That's OK. But we didn't even eat. I got home at 9:45 last night and realized I hadn't had supper. We were playing so hard w/ only a short break that we didn't even order a dang pizza.

We've been playing for beer & food for the past two weeks. We heartily enjoy playing, so why not?

Sounds like a great evening, except for missing out on the pizza! How did the music go over in the pizza place - were you playing old time?

Yep, we played about an hour or more of only OT fiddle tunes. I was throwing out several that Marc and I had never played before, some he'd never even heard before like Atlanta Quadrille and some others. Then we started singing some duet stuff like What Would You Give (in exchange for your soul)?, Slow Train Through Georgia, Handome Molly, Angel Band, etc. THEN, we got into some of The Band and did Ain't No More Cane and I Shall Be Released. Fun stuff, but the crowd was poor. there was a large party of 18 folks plus a couple of other tables with folks. the big party wasn't really listening, or they didn't acknowledge it, anyway. the other tables were paying attention and interacted alot with us. The weather turned cold and rainy that night, so business was off for them in general the whole night.

we do it again on the 29th, so hopefully this owner will advertise better. I know I'll send out more emails this next time with invites.
