My first blog!

Hi fellow fiddlers!

My name is Renee and I have played the violin for 10 years. I am classically trained but absolutely love to play Celtic music and blue grass. Could you give me ideas of good Celtic or Blue grass music? I would really appreciate it.

It depends on what you are after really if you are wanting sheet music you should try sites such as or Nova Session Sheet Music or there is a book called o'neills dance music of ireland. But if you are wanting good bands to listen to try things like danu dervish forbidden joe barrage lunasa bothy band solas are some of my favorites for tunes but if you want something a bit different I like Ben Sollee but he is not to everyones taste. you can always find good stuff on youtube find people you would like to play like and to copy there style and ornamentation to develop your own style . Bluegrass i don't know much i about i am afraid but i love the sound

Hey, Renee! Welcome aboard. For Scottish influenced, I really like Buddy MacMaster and Bonnie Rideout. Bonnie has been dubbed with the label of "chamber-folk" , and Buddy is from Cape Breton. I think that they both have beautiful tone. Then of course, the great Aly Bain. Oh, my, the list goes on and on. Happy hunting!

One of the things you're going to find is that both the types of music you mentioned there's lots of jamming involved. That means playing "by ear". So that's a skill you might have to develop, if you haven't already. If you get good at playing by ear, it's not unusual to be at a jam and listening to a tune you've never heard before and on the second go 'round your fingers are magically going to the right places, and you're playing it! That's what you're aiming for.

Good luck!
