The fiddle game

Posted by groundhogbrains on Thursday, September 10, 2009

One of my best friends gave me a great birthday present- the Violin Identification and Price Guide (book 2) by Roy Ehrhardt, 1978. This book is full of the old advertisements for violins (2661 of them!!), is searchable, and gives estimates of current values (for 1978). Book 1 is where I found my Chadwick fiddle, and a scan of the old ad in the book is in my photos.

Anyway, a new and amusing game I've discovered is to find all of the old junker violins on Ebay and try searching for them in my book. It's surprising how many I can find!! Some violins that people try to pass off as extremely valuable (Buy it Now $5500!) are actually junkers, surprise surprise. The best one I've found so far is a french violin currently going for $51 on ebay that sold for $70 in 1918 and was valued at $900 in 1978. I might have to bid on that one, just to see if it's any good. This is my problem, I'm like a cat lady for homeless fiddles.

Sounds fun.... did you bid on the French fiddle?

Yeah, but at least fiddles don't scratch the furniture and pee on the carpet!

True, very true. I didn't bid yet, it's ending tomorrow so I'll consider it then. I already have 4 working fiddles, 2 box fiddles, and 4 parts/project/junk fiddles. What I don't have is a fiddle that I am truly happy with.

Nope, did not bid, but it was tough! It went for $95. I swore the next fiddle I buy is going to be my true match, and I'll have to hear it and try it out to know.
Plus I have a violin in the white that I want to try graduating the plates on, and I should complete that first before I get any more fixer-uppers.
