Iowa State Fair - Hard Decision

Posted by David M. on Friday, July 17, 2009

After some hard deliberating, I have decided NOT to head to Des Moines on Aug. 15th for the mandolin and fiddle contests at the Iowa State Fair.  It'll be the first year I've not entered in maybe 8 years or so.  Ends up I have 2 gigs that weekend and our family has alot going on.  My wife's mom just had a kidney transplant yesterday at Mayo, so who knows what that will bring in the next few weeks.

I've made some real good friends going to the fair.  Some of them post here on the FHO and are good folks.  Unfortunately, last year one of them (you know who you are, Jenny...) moved up into our age group from the 18 and under and I am sure I'd never top her fiddling.  There was some SERIOUS competition last year and it's all fun.  I might have been the only male in our age group, but can't remember.  I guess we never know who's going to show up for it.  Chickenman, looks like we'll have to meet at the Fiddlers Picnic in Iowa City later this summer.  Good luck w/your Mr. Baber's gig there.

Adios.

Gig went well enough, lots of fans AND we got to play as the "original line up plus" which included me on fiddle and our buddy Mike Tallman on mandolin . Unfortunately, I was supposed to meet with a friend who has hired me and our banjo picker for a private gig next week for practice, and he was unable to attend, so that means not too much because he is a killer flatpicker and vocalist and we are plenty capable of following.
