Strangest thing tonight. I didnt feel like putting on my shoulder rest because I didnt have a hole lot of time. So I just went along with out it doing my practice tunes and for some darn reason I felt like my fiddle sounded much louder and more resonant and Ill be darned if I didnt think it made me sound better too. I have to wonder if this was a one time event or not, but I think I am gonna try going without it for a while and see what happens.

Why not? If later on you feel like you need it again, it costs nothing to put it back on. Some people like'em, some people don't.

I ditched mine when I got tired of figuring out how to carry it along without breaking it or losing parts. Pretty much the same reason for why I started playing by ear... I just got tired of toting books and stands and clothes pins and backpacks and notebooks. Traveling light is one of my musical goals.

I'm jealous, I would love to ditch mine, but due to a horse wreck that broke my shoulder and left a knot on it, I can't seem to get comfortable. Go forth young man, it's one less thing you have to worry with.

I wish I could give mine up. But with this giraffe neck of mine there's small hope of it ever happening. The few times I've tried resulted in a stiff neck. I know you technically shouldn't have to really USE your chin, but I have to shift my left hand when using my malformed pinkie, so . . . ack. And I'm with Rene on this-- jealous!

I bought a shoulder rest and I like the way the fiddle stays put with it on but it's not comfortable at all so it just sits in the drawer. I'm going to watch the classifieds here, though, and if used shoulder rests start showing up by the dozens, well, it's going to be all your fault!
How's the weather in Lafayette? If it's as humid as it is in Chicago, I'm predicting lots of soggy bow hair next weekend!

It has been HOT AND HUMID!!! The rain has come in buckets then just steamed everything up. Maybe it is getting it all out of its system before next weeks gathering, LOL

I am my own worst critic. when I went to photography school some years ago I submiited a photo assignment to my instructor for his review. Along with it, I submitted my own review saying what I liked and didn't like about it. I told my instructor that it might have been a better photo if I had done it this way or that.
My instructor responded with a novel approach. He said, "Do it both ways and see which one you like best."
I think that same logic applies here. You are the one who has to be comfortable with it in your playing. Try it both ways and see which way works best for you.
