I attended a great OT jam last week in Greensboro, NC, at the Green Burro. It was the first one I'd been to in a ton of years. Can't remember when I've had as much fun. I didn't count heads (too busy playing) but I'm guessing there were about 30 people playing and maybe that many more Green Burro customers when came in to listen -- and applaud -- throughout the evening. Even had some dancers.
Lots of fiddles, guitars, a couple mandolins, and more banjos (five or six) than I've seen in one room for a long time. Three upright basses showed up, too, accompanied by some huffing and puffing musicians -- it was a three-floor climb, afterall.
Hats off to the Piedmont Old Time Society -- http://www.myspace.com/piedmontoldtime and piedmontoldtime@gmail.com -- for putting it all together and making a visiting Tarheel/Texan/storyteller/banjoplayer feel terrifically welcomed. Hats off also to the Green Burro who made their third-floor back room available and for their great hospitality.
The jams are held the first Thursday of the month from 7-11 p.m. I'll be back the first chance I get.
