Greetings to all. I am a new fiddler. I rented a cheap fiddle 6 weeks ago and have been trying to probe it's mysteries since. About 3 weeks ago I found this site and it has been a revelation! It is amazing what one can learn by reading what others have written and following links. My thanks go out to all of you for making the learning process a little easier, if anything can be said to be easy concerning the fiddle. I play other instruments in many different styles and this has helped me tremendously. Just learning the mechanics of fiddle is tough enough. My hat goes off to anyone trying this as their first instrument. I have figured out about ten songs ( celtic and hymns) that are simple ,that I use to warm up on. I try to concentrate on intonation and making the notes blossom. I love the long notes possible on this instrument. Then I play along to cd's. I pick songs so I can get comfortable playing in different keys. Slowly I'm getting comfortable with more keys. I've found the Americana / country/ singer-songwriter genre to be very good for this as I play around with the melody and harmony. Hopefully soon I will find a better instrument . I am looking for an older, sweet sounding fiddle. Once again, thankyou all for the info available here. I have found fiddlers on this site to be very sharing and humble, probably because this instrument is so humbling.

mudbug, we've all be though the screetchysquawky stage, so we all empathize!
There are a LOT of antique shops and markets up your way (I know a lot of folks in your area, and used to live in Aroostook Cty.) If you haunt your local antique shops and flea markets (get there EARLY in the morning!) you will eventually turn up a cool old fiddle. Guaranteed.
You might also try hooking up with Swing and mainefiddlehead. I think they're both up in your general direction, and can probably fill you in on luthiers, and other stuff you'll need to know. And plan on next November making Fiddle Hell in Massachussetts.

Come on down to the Black Creek fiddler's reunion or the Harry Smith Frolic this summer. You'll have a blast. All skill levels will find some folks to jam with. Really!
