My dad told me when I took up playing the fiddle that he wished he could remember the one song my grandpa used to always play. He didnt know but just a few tunes and dad says he played the heck out of one of them. Well a year later, dad finally remember the song, it is called Down Yonder. I have looked it up on you tube and a couple other sites and found various scores. It is a catchy little tune. I played an audio track on one of them college web sites with an oldtimer playing it and I let dad listen to it, he said Thats the one! I now am on a mission to learn that song. The version that dad remember is a bit more difficult than some of the easier versions I have seen, but I want to play the song the way my grandpa did. I think it will be real special if I can sound like my grandpa did, I am sure it will bring back a lot of great memories for dad. I was too young to remember much about my grandpa so hopefully this will be a way for me to connect to him in my own sort of way.

Put in the woodshedding time, and I'm sure you'll get this tune under your fingers. I'm happy for you that you found the tune, and I'm sure your dad will be happy to hear you play it.

Sweet story Byra. I have a story close to yours about my Grand Father. Difference is I knew him most my life. He passed away 5 years ago and he used to play fiddle, but I never knew it. He gave it up I guess before I was born. I wish I knew the songs he played so I could grab them up for sure. Alot of times I play for him, and it seems that certain songs that I've never heard before..... I can play like I've known them for years. He's greatly missed, but I have something in common with him I never knew of until 3 years ago. I'm not going to loose that.

I think that's great! I really into genealogy right now, and I secretly hope I have a fiddler back there somewhere. My grandparents were from Oklahoma and LOVED Hee Haw. They were thrilled to hear I picked up the fiddle as a kid. They never got to hear my play. My other grandma was Norwegian, and remembered barn dances in Minnessota. She was also happy to see me play.
I bet your grandad is thrilled, where ever he is!
