I met Paul awhile back at the April Verch show. We had exchanged email addresses and talked about getting together, but it took us over two months to finally accomplish it. I'm glad we got together, Paul is a wonderful OT fiddler!
We met at the bluegrass jam up in East Stroudsburg. Got to play with a bunch of other people for awhile, then found us a corner by ourselves and played Oldtime.
Paul was taught early on by other PA oldtime fiddlers, and has been playing well over 20 years. He stays in standard tuning when he plays, like one of his favorite PA fiddlers, Jehile Kirkhuff.
I've got a list of tunes I have to learn well before next I play with him, among them Liberty (yeah, I never got around to that one!), Whiskey Before Breakfast, the Greenwood Waltz, Haste To The Wedding (which I can play badly), and a couple others, jigs he mentioned. I did record some of the tunes he played, so I may get around to posting one or two later.
He uses nashville shuffle pretty intensely, but not at all in a way that sounds overdone. In many ways he reminds me of the playing of Jane's friend Bill Huber.
Paul did promise to dig in his old field recordings of the last 25 years and we're going to get a lot of them posted up here as he finds them. I promised to help him get them up online.
Meanwhile, I've got him reallyreally curious about crosstuning . . .

It's always a blast to befriend another good, old-time musician. It will be great to hear the posted tunes.
