A good day of teaching fiddle

Posted by fiddlerdi on Wednesday, July 25, 2007

Now that I have been teaching for about 5 years, I have come to really appreciate the opportunity I have to share a part of my students musical journey. Tuesdays are usually a really busy day for me as I have over 15 students in eight hours. You might think that it would be tiring but it is actually very energiizing. At the suggestion of some of the FIddle Hangout members concerning how to be a better teacher, I began re-focusing everyone more on playing scales. We played G Major and G minor in the melodic and harmonic minor modes and did arpeggios. This common practice which I found SO BORING while studing classical music has opened the door to many conversations about playing back-up and improvising. Everyone who came into the studio seemed to be engrossed in the process of playing these scales. They were evening making up little tunes playing the notes of the scales. The funny thing is that I learned as much as they did. You always learn more by teaching others. That's one of the things that I love the most. One lady was apologizing for what seemed to her to be a very backwards way of figuring out how to understand chord progressions. I realized right then that she was one of the first people that had pointed out why that might seem strange to a beginner. I thanked her for pointing it out and told her that it is that kind of thing that will help me, help another student in the future. And they pay me to teach them? LOL  Teaching is so rewarding!

Good post, I made the decision yesterday to get back to the basics and really focus on my practice time. Not just play a bunch of tunes all willy-nilly, I just kept practicing the same old songs, the exact same way, making the same mistakes over and over again. I started keeping a journal of it here on the site, I think it's really going to help... I hope. I worked on G yesterday too, must have been a G kind of day :-D
