The official State of Illinois Old Time Fiddle Contest will be held on Sunday, October 7, at 1pm at the Effingham Performance Center (EPC), in Effingham, IL. The contest is part of Fiddle Fest, a weekend event that starts on Saturday with a benefit concert of four fiddle bands, also performing at the EPC. Admission is $5 each day. The bands include Hand Picked, a teen bluegrass quintet who were chosen to play in the 2017 and 2018 Youth in Bluegrass Contest in Silver Dollar City, Branson, MO. Also appearing will be Genevieve (Harrison) and Smith Koester, members of an award-winning fiddle band; and Patt & Possum, a fiddle-piano who play tunes from Missouri. Possum, aka Charlie Walden, has won the state fiddle contest three times. The last band to take the stage is Gold Country with lead fiddler Elijah Doty who was a prizewinner in the 2017 contest. Fiddle Fest is sponsored by the Illinois Old Time Fiddlers Association. Formed in 1965, the Illinois Old Time Fiddlers Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to reviving and furthering Old Time Fiddle Music by preserving old time tunes and fiddling techniques, and passing on this traditional form to the younger generation. Any fiddler who is a resident of Illinois is eligible to enter the contest and can do so on line at illinoisOldTimeFiddlers.org
