i have been playing Splendid Isolation and Miss Lawries for a few years now, and Farewell To Milltown for a month or two. Milltown fits right on the end of them nicely.

i like McGlinchy's playing. But Cathal Hayden's is the one i listen to if i want to get a KICK!

As always Fergal Scahill has been over them all in his brilliant way. G minor is great on fiddle...Suppose i'll have to have a go at The Goosberry Bush now! ...lol thanks for the suggestion. it's easier to come here and get suggestions, rather than having to think for myself...lol

Just checking in — I’ve been sick for almost a week now, something COVID-like, so it’s time for a doctor’s visit tonight!

I’m not going to dive any further into the usual instructional material online. Instead, today I’m just going to pick a tune from two forummers here whose tune choices I really enjoy, and who both have that excellent no-nonsense flair in their playing :-D

Let’s see what I can do with it — hopefully I can get something similar going!

I am aiming to learn Raleigh and Spencer next. Not sure what Key or Version but I reckon it will be cross tuned. I have a clawhammer banjo buddy that I want to record a duo tune with and I think this is what I'm going to go for. There are so many great versions out there...lol. I've listened to MANY already.

Tommy Jarrell played "Raleigh and Spencer" in DDAD tuning: slippery-hill.com/content/raleigh-spencer That's the only version I see at Slippery Hill, and I think all modern versions are probably derived directly or indirectly from his playing.
To me, it seems an odd choice to start a fiddle/banjo duo with, but good luck with it.

I did start with Tommy's! I've known it in some of the way newer groups play it but heard a Dirk Powell version I am fancy to. My buddy who plays banjo is in a somewhat alternative string band type thing with a little edge. A little rowdy if you will. I too was once in a string band that was kind of wild and used the term bluegrass VERY lightly...lol. 

The Cajun/Zydeco journey curved towards Bob Wills/Western Swing. Western Swing, swung towards Rock-a-Billy. What I don't have is an upright bass. Don't know if it's worth it. Sometimes you gotta dance with who brung you. I feel not a new approach but an approach none the less, starting to gel.

So if you'd be playing "Raleigh and Spencer" in D, would you cross tune GDGD or standard?

Started this morning with GDGD and it's a pretty easy or obtainable melody but not sure which is the best way.
I'm going to keep at it...

This has always seemed like such a "Tommy tune" to me that I've never been tempted to try it, but we have a member who recorded it and maybe he'll chime in.
Also, I remembered that I'd heard this song somewhere else - from Fields Ward. He played it on guitar, in what sounds like an open tuning (supposedly "Uncle Eck" Dunford taught him some fingerpicking pieces). He called it "Riley and Spencer" and here he's in A, but on another recording at the Field Recorders Collective its in G.

Well this is probably boring to everybody but me...lol...but just sayin'...I think it won't be too long, if things go as I expect and hope, before I finish the song I've started on my presonus/multi -track recording dofloppy machine thingy...

...so, since I'm hoping this time I could finish one, I'll tell you what I've started ... it's the old Cat Stevens song, Morning has Broken...of course as almost always, it's one I played back when I hit the bigtime in the mid-70s and had myself a regular gig at the ol' Steak House, playing for tips and having a blast ---sorry can't think...my life is innundated with caregiving, each and every second of the day...so what was I saying? Yes, Moring has Broken. Anyway, normally I used to like to record the whole dang thing I was working on in one sitting...like within 3 hours or so. This time, it's been 15 min here or there, with my train of thought getting lost in the stretches between times. This is why I just like to do it as soon as the idea/mood strikes. And I love doing it, so ... I get motivated sometimes when it seems difficult to do.

So of course I can't stop thinking about it and just hoping in a few days I can get back to it and get it all hanging together and not sounding like a choppy, flip-flopping of disjunct mess of chords and groundhogs singing. I can't spend much time or thought, but I do still love to do it and think about it all the time. So...I know somehow when i've linked anything I recorded and made a youtube of, just a little while back, was somehow insulting or something to somebody here who supposedly quit the forum because I linked stuff I did...or something...I'm still totally confused about it but if I do finish the song and record it, make a YouTube, and share a link here...asking for forgiveness in advance if that turns somebody off real bad. I mean no harm.

So that ain't what I'm playing today, but it is what I hope to be playing in a few days and can't stop thinking about in the mean time. Have fun, whoever's playing what today or any day!

Good to hear you still have your paddles in the water!

With the advent of all these kids making Podcasts, I hope I've gleaned onto something good. It's like a Presonence?? It's two audio inputs thru a little mixer, into USB. So I can run my multi track recorder (app) with something other than the built-in mikes, on the tablet. 

I have a real craving for creating a trio. Guitar, Bass, and Fiddle. At least having fun playing with a guitar and bass, under my control. (They're nowhere to be found, otherwise)

Today I have vertigo,it seems :-/ waste of a beautiful Saturday. It usually fades in a day or two but it’s so mysterious, I never know what triggered it. This is the first episode in years, but it’s that familiar awful dizzy feeling.

But had some nice tunes last night in bookstore managed by a session friend. The funniest time was when we all wound up trying each other’s instruments! I tried a bodhran, a concertina and a cello. Our cello player was playing a fiddle while holding it vertical on his lap, haha. Nobody tried the flute though, that gets a bit personal- haha.

NC, vertigo is so awful Alfred Hitchcock even made a psycho movie about it...or something by that name anyway. It ain't no fun. I hope it's gone away by now. Most of my family has had unpredictable episodes and everybody just hates it. Hope you're back to normal now.
