One of my favorite fiddle tunes. I'm playing guitar, mandolin, and fiddle on this recording done on my computer with a couple mics and a tascam 122, into an old, old version of CoolEdit Pro.

You do a really good job on the fiddle on this one. I wouldn't dare to record anything with myself on the fiddle. Not yet anyway. (You're putting us on, aren't you? You aren't really 88 are you ? :-) You look younger than me on the photo) I gotta downloade some of these great tunes, and try to learn some of them on the mandolin.

Wow is that delightful. I'm so glad to've found this forum. It'll save on trips to the used-record shop to look for fiddle records; the record-store business is tanking anyhow--scarcely anything there these days. If I'd ever heard this tune before I forget (my scattershot approach to learning tunes & keeping track of titles), but what a great tune! The guitar back-up is real stately & totally apt. The ins-and-outs of the mandolin-fiddle twining are so much fun. Really jolly. Repeat: DELIGHTFUL. Radiates happiness. Sounds nice too, recording-wise! Merry munchkin music and I mean that as a great compliment.

This is a favorite tune of mine too .... great job on it .
I wish I could get my act together enough to make multi-track

Yea, I know about the multi-track thing... It's takes a bunch of effort, and I've gotten lazier and lazier about it... It's so much simple to just play your fiddle and not worry about recordings... even so, I still hope I can talk myself into doing a bunch more...
thanks fo the kind words,
Steve

Hi Steve! I just read your thread on seeking critical comments (both positive AND negative) from others. So I picked a tune on your page (this one) and now I'm going to critique it. And let me say that whenever I comment on someone's playing, I don't like to say "Great Job!!" I'll say what I liked, and I also try to tell someone where they can improve IMHO.---------------------------My feeling was that you played the tune fairly well, but I thought it sounded WAY too fast! You weren't getting a good tone on most of the notes, and because the bow was moving faster than you could command it, I thought some of the time values of notes were short-changed. One thing I've been trying to incorporate into my own playing is to slow down, esp. when I play in public. 'Cause then I have all this energy, and it gets hard to rein myself in. On the positive side your recording demonstrates your familiarity with the tune, and I love the multi-instrumental approach. Maybe next time, start out with a nice n easy guitar rhythm, then layer in the fiddle & mandolin on top of that (which I'd bet you did here, but maybe your guitar rhythm was a little too fast for the fiddle). So, Steve, I hope I'm not, like, "giving you both barrels". I absolutely love listening to your mando playing, and I know your fiddle technique will catch up eventually too.

Thanks Bruce.. i agree with all you say. It was way too fast for my fiddling... The original recording was only mandolin and guitar and was made four years ago, (June 04)... about six months later I took up the fiddle and tried adding it to the old recording about two years ago. If I tried doing it today, I hope and believe it would be at least a little better, but it would still be awful darned fast. You're right about "bow-command". Every bow-speed wants its own particular bow pressure, and on top of that, different for each string... There's never any shortage of things to work on with the fiddle! thanks for taking the time to listen and share your thoughts. I appreciate it.
Steve
