People's personalities can express styles of music. I wrote this samba to have some of my wife's qualities of grace, flow, and surprise. Demo recorded by Jason Shapiro, tenor saxophone; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Brian Howell, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums.

Appalachian Awakening is an extended piece that expresses my love of the Appalachian Mountains. The Rockies are beautifully majestic, but there is a deep-rooted soul in the Appalachians that speaks to me. Demo recorded by Amy Leonard, violin; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass.

A slow, soulful blues for those times when we need to play a slow, soulful blues. The title comes from a day when I was reflecting upon lost ancient civilizations and wondering about their music. What did the music sound like? Did the musicians back then have steady gigs? This is a great tune for jazz / blues fiddle! Demo recorded by Jason Shapiro, tenor saxophone; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Brian Howell, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums.

Blues For Lester is not a conventional blues. Rather, it is an exceptionally quirky blending of jazz, blues, funk, and a touch of contemporary classical. The piece is an expression of my admiration for Lester Young, the great jazz tenor saxophonist, who had many quirky qualities in his music. The piece was originally conceived as a feature for violin and jazz rhythm section. However, any instruments are welcome to have a go at it. Demo recorded by Amy Leonard, violin; Jason Shapiro, tenor saxophone; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums.

In case folks in the fiddle community are thinking that I've totally lost my mind in posting this music, there is a method to my madness. :)) Buzzards in Love is an extended piece for wind ensemble that I wrote in 2009. The music has a good amount of humor and it's intended to be fun to play. If there is a school or community band in your area, please see if they could be interested in it. Contact me for the score and a set of parts. The music is being made available to interested bands for no cost. SO, HOW DOES A FIDDLE COME IN, you are probably asking? The score has several improvisation sections. The "Roadkill Interlude" section (heard as a period of silence in the demo recording) is completely open to anything that is creative and fun. I can easily imagine the band bringing in a fiddle player to cut loose in that section and totally tear it up. Thus, if there is a band in your area and if the director has an open mind and a spirit of adventure, this piece could be a great chance for a fiddler to perform with a band. Note: the demo recording was generated by Silibelius software and is a rough approximation of how the peice sounds with a real band.

Shifting time meter Funk! The title expresses the composer's distain for contending with monster SUVs being driven on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. This piece has an emphasis on ensemble improvisation -- intended to have an effect of quickly changing music and radio sounds as one can hear in heavy traffic. Demo recorded by Jason Shapiro, soprano saxophone; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Brian Howell, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums. NOTE: This piece has improvisation & performance concepts that are not evident in the demo recording. Please follow a copy of the music while listening to the recording. Playing the piece with more funk and edge is encouraged!

Donut Music is an extended piece for solo guitar. This performance is by Keith Calmes. The composition is on Keith's CD All We Know Is Now. It is available at itunes, cdbaby, and www.keithcalmes.com. Program notes: Donut Music came into being thanks to guitarist Keith Calmes asking me to write a full-length composition for him and a stroke of inspiration from a line in a story written by my granddaughter Eillonwy Aldridge: "Sitting in a dark room, eating a chocolate donut". Hearing that line (as told by my niece Caitlin Sherwood) I immediately thought, "What a great idea for a piece of music!" Drawing upon this imagery, the music represents streams of thoughts, memories, images, and feelings as one's life is contemplated over a donut. The composition is in 9 movements (or bites). The movements have varied lengths, from miniatures to developed pieces, and a diversity of roots-based musical styles including blues, Appalachian, tango, jazz, samba, along with contemporary sound pieces. Miniature compositions have been an interest to me for many years. With Donut Music's imagery of streams of thoughts and memories, it gave me an opportunity to have several miniatures with the longer pieces. The miniatures represent random and quickly changing thoughts. Above all, this piece is meant to be fun and playful. The score has optional improvisation in movements 2 (blues), 7 (tango), and 9 (samba). Performers have a considerable amount of freedom to shape this music to their vision and personal style. In addition to being performed on solo guitar, the score can be easily adapted for other instrumentation such as piano and small ensembles. Donut Music was premiered by Keith Calmes on April 28, 2012 in Swarthmore, PA.

Farmhouse at Sunset / Evening Rain is unusual music. It begins as a gentle, reflective, waltz with a touch of a modern Appalachian feeling and then turns into a jazz slip jig. The slip jig (9/8) is one of my favorite forms of Celtic fiddle music. Demo recorded by Amy Leonard, violin; Jeff Knoettner, piano; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass.

A gentle and reflective bossa nova. Unusual form. Originally conceived for violin and jazz rhythm section. After this recording was made I found that I was not quite happy with the tune's bridge. So, I made a minor tweak to it. Instead of just slowing the tempo down, the bridge now has a "slow, freely" tempo marking and a fermata over each of the 4 bars to give it more of a free-time feeling. Demo recorded by Amy Leonard, violin; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums.

A minor key jazz waltz with some interesting features: minor 7th and major 7th chords over a pedal point through much of the tune and a touch of shifting time. Demo recorded by Amy Leonard, violin; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums.

Here's something different! New Market is a fiddle tune with a mix of old-time and contemporary styles. This tune represents a vision that I've had since the early 1990's of old-time fiddle music being an early branch of the jazz family tree. In this vision I see jazz players going back to these roots and playing the music in contemporary ways. It's my hope that the tunes that I've written in various fiddle styles will also be discovered. I specifically had jazz players in mind when I wrote New Market; however, if it catches on with traditional fiddle players it's perfectly fine with me. :)) Demo recorded by Amy Leonard, violin; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass.

Sorry, no fiddle on this track. However, please imagine the alto sax being a jazz violin. Inspired by the tango, New Tango No. 1 is about dance movement as well as exploring movement between time and free-time. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section plays in and out of time. The soloist cues the rhythm section as when to make time/free-time and harmonic shifts. The background ensemble is entirely in free-time with each note conducted. There is a considerable amount of freedom in the score regarding instrumentation. The soloist conceivability can be any instrument. Ideally, the jazz rhythm section uses accordion (or keyboard with accordion patch), piano and/or guitar, bass, and drums. The background ensemble can have 4 (or multiples of 4) woodwinds, brass, a mix of woodwinds & brass, or strings. The solo section has an open form. The background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life, give it a sense of drama and momentum, and take the audience on a journey. Demo recorded by Jason Shapiro, alto saxophone; Jeff Knoettner, keyboard (strings, accordion); E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass; Skip Rohrich, drums.

This piece is part of a series of new tango compositions. Each one explores a particular quality of the tango. Number 5 is about laying aside feelings of apprehension and being bold. It was originally written as Movement 7 in my composition Donut Music. I like this tango so much that I decided to also have it as a separate piece. This performance is by Keith Calmes. Donut Music is on Keth's CD All We Know is Now. It is available at itunes, cdbaby, and www.keithcalmes.com.

October Joy is a slip jig with touches of contemporary jazz and shifting time. I think of it as being a good fusion of jazz and roots music. Demo recorded by Amy Leonard, violin; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; Peter McCarthy, bass.
