Multitrack recording where I'm playing two fiddles (GDGD cross tuning for both), clawhammer banjo, guitar, and a bass (actually a 9-noter marimbula made by Michael Allen of Cloud Nine Instruments in Ostrander, OH). The recording sounds best with decent speakers or headphones to pick up the bass. For those that download it, "Big Sugar Creek" is just a fictitious name of my "virtual group" that's actually just me in multitrack.

Multitrack recording I made using two fiddles, Enoch Tradesman clawhammer banjo, Michael Allen Cloud Nine marimbula (bass), Gold Tone banjo uke, and Cloud Nine hammered dulcimer. If listening through a laptop, headphones/earbuds will permit you to hear the bass. Here's the Fiddler's Companion information about the tune: "Old-Time, Breakdown. G Major. Standard tuning. AB. Source Manon Campbell (1890-1987) learned the tune from his paternal aunt, Viney Campbell Lusk. Apparently, the source for the tune in the family was Campbell’s uncle, who supposedly learned the tune while rafting down the Kentucky River at night. He heard it coming from house parties and dances along the river, but named it “Coal Harbor Bend” because he had become caught in a slow whirlpool at a bend in the river at Coal Harbor (Titon, 2001). Source for notated version: Manon Campbell (Hallie, Letcher County, Ky., 1978) [Titon]. Titon (Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes), 2001; No. 26, pg. 61."

Recorded in multitrack (Tascam DP-004): Fiddle (Gailani, tuned AEAE, muted), Clawhammer Banjo (Enoch Tradesman, tuned to G tuning capoed up two frets to A), Bass (comes in on second verse and headphones/earbuds recommended to be audible; made by Michael Allen of Cloud Nine Instruments, 9-Noter Marimbula). Couldn't locate too much else about the source of the tune, other than a vocal Old Time version by the New Lost City Ramblers.

This is a tune that was written by Missouri fiddler Roger Netherton (part A), Lucia Thomas (part B), and David Roberts (title) at a late night Clifftop 2014 jam session. The fiddle was then recorded by Roger at home and posted by Robin Netherton, also a member of the FHO, on Facebook, where I learned of and heard the tune. I was so impressed with the fiddling and tune that I took it upon myself to add Bass, Banjo, and Guitar to Roger's Fiddle track, and here is the result, which of course has been shared both with and approved of by Roger and Robin. Terrific people, a terrific fiddler, and a terrific "New Old Time" fiddle tune; my adding the tracks was really the easy part.

Multitrack recording I made this morning featuring fiddles, bass, hammered dulcimer, clawhammer banjo, bass, and vocal parts. The song originated with Fiddlin' John Carson from back in the 1920s. Bruce Molsky also teaches it on one of his instructional DVDs. If you download it, as always, the "Big Sugar Creek" artist name attached to the file is just a "virtual band name" I use for these multitrack recordings.

A fiddler and Facebook friend from Central New York near Utica, Jim Stanko, this afternoon sent me an mp3 of his fiddling of this wonderful tune, "Double File." He does an outstanding job on the tune, and subsequently I added clawhammer banjo, bass, and guitar to the fiddle. The result of the mix is the tune you're hearing here. Source Material from The Fiddler's Companion: DOUBLE FILE. Old‑Time, Breakdown. USA, North Carolina. A Major. AEae tuning. AABB. The tune "bears an obvious resemblance" to the commonly found "Leather Breeches," says Bill Hicks (1972), who also sees similarities to Emory Bailey and Burl Hammonds version of "Camp Chase." Not too much fiddle on this one, mostly "chops," though it carries the melody starting with the third time through. A multitrack recording using a Tascam multitrack recorder, a very slow, lazy and very simplified version of Larry Unger's tune "Elkins." Enoch 12" Tradesman (stuffed with a small towel at neck joint) playing lead in Double D, Martin HD-28 guitar on rhythm, Cloud Nine Marimbula on bass (use headphones/earbuds/other good speakers to pick up the sound), H. Luger CV-300 fiddle also playing some lead. This is certainly not a note-for-note accurate banjo version of Larry Unger's excellent tune, nor as well-played as Jason White's version on YouTube, but I have attempted to capture much of the essence of the tune as I hear it.

Recorded (all except the bass, added later at home) while camping at NYS DEC Buck Pond Campground near Onchiota, NY last week. Multitrack recording in key of G: Fiddle (cross-tuned GDGD); Clawhammer Banjo (G tuning); Guitar (standard tuning); Marimbula (Bass) by Michael Allen, Cloud Nine Instruments. The fiddle and banjo start off part A and play throughout. The guitar and bass join in beginning with the first part B. The tune: GOING DOWN TO CAIRO. Old‑Time, Breakdown. USA. G Major. Standard tuning. AB. A version of “Liza Jane.” Cairo is a river town on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Ohio, and was quite a rowdy town in its day. The word "Cairo" is pronounced "Kay‑row."

A multitrack version I recorded with fiddle (Liu Xi workshop, ADAE), clawhammer banjo (Enoch 12" Tradesman with Rickard Dobson ring), guitar, bass. I am unable to find much information about this particular tune, other than this link to its being played: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQrGJMvqCGQ If anyone has information about the tune, e.g., history, sources, please let me know. It's a tune that a number of us in the Crooked Lake Fiddle Club (Keuka Lake, New York) played often and regularly a few years ago. Unfortunately, so many members of the group have passed away in the past 4-5 years that the group has disbanded; very sad to lose the friendship and musicianship of so many of what was once a fun jam and performance group. The tune is very simple but catchy and fun to play.
