Join us at the Rolland Fiddle Camp, June 22 - 26, 2015 in Westcliffe, Colorado, located on the eastern slopes of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains at 8000'. You'll learn fiddle, banjo & other instruments in a small camp setting. It will be a week of intensive music immersion, study and fun. Our goal is to help each participant make a significant improvement in their playing skills and music knowledge. Camp will be small enough to allow for one-on-one help as needed from our faculty of experienced teachers who are also professional performers. We accept students learning from scratch as well as players with professional skills. Your camp experience is tailor-made based on your interests and skill level. One or two core instructors for morning and afternoon group lessons throughout the week help you achieve your stated goals. Additional workshops are offered in a variety of topics, and practice time is worked into your schedule, as well as free time to enjoy the charming town and gorgeous mountains. Recreational opportunities abound in this area known as a hiker's paradise with an abundance of mountain lakes, streams and high peaks.
One of the really enjoyable features of our camp is the "Folk Orchestra" where we learn to play together regardless of skill level. Gail Rolland, a career orchestra teacher, directs the rehearsals, and camp director Peter Rolland creates parts for all the players at a level they can understand. The "orchestra" meets daily and gives a performance at the end of camp. It's been a camp highlight every year.
At most fiddle camps, students learn tunes, and Rolland Fiddle Camp is no exception. We teach by ear and also by sheet music or tab. We strive to help each student become a better player by showing them ways to improve their technique. Our experienced instructors are keen observers and are eager to share playing tips with their students.
In addition to the core classes there are daily workshops and band practice. We will group participants into 4- and 5-piece bands which rehearse daily and perform at the end of camp concert.
Workshop topics in our past camps have included workshops in improvisation, in specialized styles (eg, Celtic, Canadian, cowboy, western swing, Cajun, Appalachian, Texas, contest, bluegrass), cross-tuning, twin fiddling, singing, tune- and song-writing.
We welcome string teachers wanting to learn how to incorporate fiddling into your string classes and convey the real sound of fiddling. I have been giving workshops on fiddling in colleges and at string teacher conferences since the mid-1970s, so this track is part of our mission statement.
Giselle Lee did a great job last summer with the beginning clawhammer banjo students, and we're happy to have her back again for 2015. Grace Rolland will again teach singing and cello; followers of Run Boy Run know what a talent she has for both. She's also does a great job calling the evening square dance (and teaching the dances!).
Jamming, dancing and informal concerts are things to look forward to in the evenings.
