Don plays the traditional music of the Ozarks and southern hills. The fiddle waltzes, ancient murder ballads, and dance tunes have been handed down from generation to generation. He draws his material from the Ozarks, Midwest and southern United States. Focusing on the rich heritage of local old-time fiddle, banjo and mandolin players in the Howell county area, he has also researched the published work of folklorists such as Vance Randolph, Alan Lomax and Irwin Silber. Owing to his masterful renditions of the authentic Ozark tradition, Don Buedel is a requested performer at Heritage Programs sponsored by the National Park Service and Missouri Department of Conservation. Buedel has won many fiddle contests with his highly rhythmic Missouri short-bow fiddling style. Don Buedel is a veteran multi-instrumentalist and singer who has extensively researched the area's distinctive musical tradition, incorporating it into his own style. He has performed on National Public Radio and Old Time Music Venues throughtout the Midwest. His career highlights include an "F-Stop" performance on Springfield's KY-3 television, and a tour of Germany as Fiddle Accompanist for a Traditional American dance troupe. Don is a founder of the Ozark Heritage Festival in West Plains, Mo. and has worked with the support of the Missouri Folk Arts Program, collecting tunes from tradition bearers and performing for audiences throughout Missouri and the Midwest. While a long time resident of Missouri, he played for festivals, square dances, and community events, and opened shows for artists including Doc Watson, Norman Blake and Dan Crary.
