Next up we have, “Direct from Tallahassee, Florida,” Bob and Mary Z. Cox. Mary Z is a two time Florida banjo champion and a six time mountain dulcimer champ in Florida, North Carolina & Tennessee. Music from their seven cds is played on National Public Radio’s Thistle and Shamrock, All Songs Considered, Pandora World Music Genome & the BBC. Mary’s version of “Sally in the Garden” on A Secret Life of Banjo will be in the soundtrack of an upcoming film in the Hunger Games series. Mary Z has taught clawhammer banjo and mountain dulcimer from coast to coast including banjo for a decade at the John C. Campbell School in North Carolina. Her articles on banjo &dulcimer have appeared in Banjo Newsletter & Dulcimer Player News. Mary Z is a third generation Floridian, actively involved in banjo rescue.
Bob is originally from North Carolina, but Florida has been his home state since he was six years old. He plays a beautiful Ken Miller guitar and he accompanies Mary Z everywhere to make sure that she does not accidently purchase any new banjos or dulcimers.
Mary’s newest cd, Girl With the Banjo Tattoo, was chosen as a “Best Banjo Cd of 2011” by the editor of Banjo Newsletter and called “iconoclastic” in a recent in depth review in the February 2012 Banjo Newsletter. It features 5 string cello banjo, cigar box banjo, fretless minstrel banjo, as well as several of Mary’s favorite open back banjos. It is available from Mary's website:
