Born in 1986 in Mt. Airy, NC. Great-grandfather Henry Edmonds played oldtimey banjo and french harp with his father Rural Thomas Edmonds who fiddled. Legend has it they won all of the old fiddler's contests in Surry County around the turn of the century. Henry would later make music with neighbors Esker Hutchins and Lee Jackson and strongly admire the playing of Uncle Charlie Lowe. Andy Edmonds took up guitar at 11 playing in a finger style similar to piedmont blues but mainly playing sacred numbers. At 13 took up banjo in the finger picking and also learned to clawhammer. He accompanied Benton Flippen throughout the last decade of Flippen's life, often playing banjo or guitar as needed. Andy learned much of his fiddling from standing next to Benton at square dances and shows.
