Jefferylong...yes, anything goes...anything that would happen in a real live festival ... Join us anyway you like! If we could figure how to get some ht dog and pizza stands going here, I'd be just happier! Bart, it's terrible you're crunched for time and don't feel like you can stay...but it's a long time until Februrary 15 th, and you've already done so much wonderful stuff with the tune...so...I have the feeling we might see you back before we start the next one. I hear ya though, one f the big reasons I wanted this to be mre a tune of the month rather than tune of the week is because the erratic nature f my life right now, there are weeks I don't get to touch the fiddle at all...very frustrating. F course the other reason is that for me a month just gives me more time to try to get my thinking sorted and then to play through some stuff I think about doing many, many , many (ad nauseum) times to compensate for my lack of experience and tendency to suddenly crash and burn without warning through the middle of a tune. Anyway, I hate to think you'll leave, and I choose to believe, that lihe Arnold says..."You"ll be BACK!".

Hey boxbow, anyway you can get it on here will work. A lot of people have done YouTube videos so far, I don't have an account with them yet so am planning on just a MP3. Major reconsiderations!!! I got some time this morning to look this tune over again with fiddle in hand, I'm sure something will happen at any moment to pull me away, because I'm never lucky enough to stick with it for as long as I'd like...but anyhow I'm terribly unhappy with the way I'm dealing with those notes in the A part to kick the whole thing off and basically makes up the way the A part goes...the notes to: "did you ever see the devil". When it gets to " uncle shoe," I'm ok from there on, but have to spend extra energy collecting myself from hanging on the that first part by a thread, which is distracting and I think might be what leads to my crashes...you know where it all just busts apart to pieces on ya. I'm trying to saw stroke these first several notes and there's a string change right there on the first, quick, upstroke...no good...just doesn't work for me. I sat and tried to carefully learn it by repetition and then it gets robotic fir me and all the excitement is gone...no good, no good. This morning I noticed I can do the notes like that on the low strings no problem...so I think this is some logistical problem between me and the key of G on the fiddle. Nw I have to figure out how to solve this issue so I can ge happy, free, loose, carefree as I play this tune, and not feel like a rehearsed robot or about to crash and burn. Yeeeee- Haww! THIS, to me, is fiddling!!!! How am I going to get around this and fell like I'm coming out musical and happy? I think one solution might be to find a tuning that would restructure the way the string changes fall against the notes...GDGD or some other cross tuning. But cross tuning makes me crazy, so that might be somebody's solution besides mine. Of course, a person could play it out f a different key....but I'm sticking with G because I absolutely love playing with the old time jam tracks, and they're playing it in G, which makes me think if I ever do get out to a real festival r jam, most people will probably want it in G, especially Old Time people. So my only other option is...hard to explain...I should really majestic another YouTube...but afraid my time for this is limited...so et me just try to sum up what I'm thinking right now: it seems my concept of those notes are firmly burned into my soul so I'm gonna see if I can hang on to some way of nt compromising that, although possibly allowing some slight alterations by doing a G double stop ob the middle two strings as I start this A part...I'm thinking that way there might be some wiggle room with the bowing plus fingering, and some auditory spots that are up for interpretation f the individual ear...like if an artist draws a hint of a line, but it disappears, and can be interpreted by the eye as either shadow, continuation, etc. Like an illusion up for grabs, so to speak. I'm thinking maybe this is what I'll try...if I get the chance I will attempt a YouTube for show and tell, which s better than words...not are how much time I'll get for it.

Peggy, I'm never sure exactly what you mean about stuff like this, but if you're having trouble crossing from the D string to the A string on that first phrase, you might try it in A - its all on the A string. In fact the whole melody can be played on just the A and E strings. Its kind of like if you tuned to GDGD. What you lose in A (in standard tuning) is the resonance of the open D and G strings.

Yeah, I think that's good advice from Doug. Try playing it in A in standard on just the A and E strings, and if you find a bowing/arrangement you like then tune down to GDGD, play it the exact same way and you'll have it in G along with all the extra resonance (plus the option to play the exact same thing down an octave).

Well I've been trying out my new method here a little bit this morning...amazingly undisturbed by interruptions! But anyway I think it's gonna work out lihe I want itvto...don't know if I'll get time for a YouTube...if it's still all quiet here I might try to see if I can in a little bit after I get a few things done....but here's what I'm doing...r trying to do: rather than perceive the first few notes as one finger on D string followed by one finger moving on A string...I'm chaining my concept of the beginning...I don't play fiddle as notes, but as concept, really. So the new idea is to slam down with my left hand as the beginning phrase stars out with a G double stop on both strings, D and A, then let up off the D string for the open drone as it moves on to more activity on the A string, or else even hold down on the D string for the double stop sound...however I fell like doing it at the moment. This also frees me up for getting more into concept, because the other way, trying to grab the A string with a quick up bow after the first down bow on the D string, was making me feel all locked in with notes and messin with giving me the freedom of playing outside f notes and inside f concept...then besides that it was so darn hard to control it was making me have to have a recovery period on down the line and just causing me a lit if distraction, plus feeling I was walking that line between actually playing and the crash and burn...this new way, I can quickly bow down and up with both strings stopped and bw on both strings at once, doing whatever I can to encourage the perception of th ear to hear th concept of one tone over another...it's possible I coulda gotten a YouTube up within the time I took to jot these thoughts down, but I do have dishes waiting, many dishes...and need to get to them because people tend to call ne away just whenever, etc. Like I saud, if I ge left alone long enough I might try the YouTube show and tell...this s probaly stuff everybody else already knows to do and I might just now be gettin the smarts to see it for myself...lol...oh well that's life, ain't it?

Wow, thanks guys. I was actually a bit hesitant at first to post it, so I made my roommate watch it to make sure it wasn't too bad! Peggy, I still believe your version is definitely more creative and/or dynamic than mine. In fact, I'm sure I'll refer to yours soon when I look to start adding some more variations. As for those first few notes, I am in GDAE and I just practiced that particular run a bunch at slow speed until it got uncomfortable to play it so slow. It's still kinda shaky in my opinion, but I suppose that just takes some practice. And less coffee! Can't wait to hear some more versions. Thanks again for listening!

I missed Scrubber's version...thanks for the link...man he was tearin it up in GDGD...very good stuff! I took my plan of action video back off of YouTube, by the way, in case anyone no ices and wonders where it went.. Sometimes if I run across my videos I can't stand them and take them off...it's just gets if I avoid running into them anymore...especially if I talk on them. Anyway, still planning to put another playing video up again maybe next week if I can, and now re- tempted to try it in GDGD ...lol! scrubber sure did t good !

Hey, y'all! Should we cross-post a link to this on one of the other forum categories (playing advice or other fiddle related)? I don't check this forum out very much because I play on this website at work (naughty girl!), and I can't watch Youtube or listen to MP3's. This is incentive enough to log on at home, though. I wouldn't have known about this at all except for the newsletter. I already play this tune, so I'll post my version in the next day or two - might make a video of a fiddle and banjo duet. I'll look forward to listening to everyone else's stuff and maybe incorporating some new ideas into my version.

Well I just did put up something on the playing advice forum...but I thought f something else...when we put up our final versions of videos ( don't know how this could apply to mp3s), we should try to apply real festival stuff to our videos...see whose final version includes the best real life festival props...drinks within view, festival clothes, food within view, or well I guess even on mp3s somebody could put some festival sounds...laughter, applause, dancing noises...maybe I'm just nutty, of course, but it might be extra incentive! Speaking f which, my recently updated iPad as me so frustrated with viewing youtubes now...and since it's my main connection to the world, I sure hope it acts ok when I get to trying to put up videos, otherwise I'll have to pull ut the old klunky camera and old monster computer and fight with that unfriendly setup, like in the old days. I'm gonna try updating my update and see if things improve one of these days when I get time...or else I might have some real work trying to get my youtubes up!!! Anyway, enough of that...I think I'll try to do my best to create a festive, festival- like video, if possible! Whatcha all think? Am I just a nut, or would it add to the fun??? As if the fiddling part wasn't enough of a challenge in itself...lol!!!!

Fiddle and Banjo... all I can say about yours is, well, WOW! I think you really played a very original, cool-sounding version and your playing is really nice! I enjoyed it very much. Pogo, your Old Timey version sounds wonderful, as of course your fiddling always does... um, well I think technically it is sort of cheating to use old versions... lol... like if you came to the festival and instead of opening up your case you just played your CD for us! But I'm always willing to look the other way...LOL... you play so good anyhow, and in this day and age of everybody hurriing up more and more and hard to get things done, well, it is a virtual festival... so however we can hear 'em should be ok! Thanks, you guys, for the contributions!
It's been A very bad week for me and music... one of those weeks where even if I take a sip of coffee I get called away to help somebody do something or just listen to their stuff, etc. Let alone open up a fiddle case! Then my ipad and youtube suddenly seem to have become enemies... so... well, I'm trying the best I can... maybe not this week but maybe I'll get some final festival version up next week... running out of time... Februrary is marching alone in the sunshine for us, the way most of January did.... can't say I miss winter much! Let's start thinking about next months festival tune... someone suggested Westphalia Waltz a little while ago... no other opinions and I'm inclined to be of the mind that we just go with whatever suggestion gets put out there first, as long as it was taken from oldtimejam.com so everybody has a chance to listen to it if they need to, see some tabs maybe (I guess... lol... I don't do tabs but I think OTJ has them on there), play along with a slow version if they need to or have the fun of fast backup if they want it. Westphalia Waltz is on there... so... going once, going twice.... are we sold on next month WPH Waltz?????

Well it's only February second...we've still got time but let me ask, does anyone see anything good to us coming up with some sort of system to picking our festival tunes? Like either first call gets his/ her tune; vote ( sounds hard to do!); pick from the top 20 of old time jam; alternate keys, like pick an A tune, followed by a D tune, then G,etc.; or just go down the one in alphabetical order, or what? We've got time, and we've agreed on where we pick the tunes from...now, HOW are we gonna pick the tunes???? Come on, now, put them thinking caps on and lets get some opinions!!!!

my 2cents.
Start a thread for nominations. This new thread becomes the permanent home of nominations and discussion of what tune to choose for the each month. A moderator can roll it over to a new thread when it gets too long. Every tune mentioned goes on the list. Your favorite tunes and tunes that show up in the nominations alot get priority. In the end it's your choice or the choice of whomever you pass leadership of the monthly festival to.

This process sounds reasonable. I like the idea of using contest rules such as "reel, waltz, something else" to bring variety, but I'm happy to go along with just about anything.

Yes, I recorded myself playing the drones after I had recorded the main reel, while listening to the main reel's recording in headphones.....If that makes any sense at all! The Audacity program makes it all possible! This was my very first attempt at adding drones, but I really like how they came out.

fiddle and banjo player - The drones and ornaments are really nice, and it sounds good, but what about the meter/phrasing? I think you'd have a hard time dancing figures to this. Miss McLeod's is one of the quintessential dance tunes - In Knauff's Virginia Reels books, this is the tune for the namesake "Virginia Reel" piece. Just wondering if you did this on purpose, or if something got lost along the line.
