Thanks,

Ordered mine a couple weeks back, showed up as promised within a couple days. I got both #1 and #2, haven't tried #2 yet. So far, #1 is living up to the hype. Smooth and grabby at the same time. I used Hill Dark before and won't go back. The hill seems a lot grainier and chalkier in comparison. Take this for what it's worth, but there was a (almost imperceptible) delay between when I would start bowing and when a note would sound with the hill, with the #1 I don't have that perception. Very responsive.
Given the current offer - delivered to your door for under $4 a cake - I strongly suggest giving Magic Rosin a try, there is really no reason not to. Even if it cost as much or more as other rosins, I would buy it.
The only drawback is that I still don't play like Michael Cleveland, I guess I'll have to wait until Magic Rosin 1.2 comes out...

One thing I learned right away is that you only ever need a small amount; I worked at two of my bows with a cloth to get rid of at least some of the rosin that was on there, and some came off, but the bows still played decently. But I tried some #2 on my Incredibow Omnibow, and some #1 on my 'good' wood bow: it went on smoothly and was a pleasure to use; grabbed the strings smoothly without any 'crunch' sound. More feedback as I play with it. Now to figure out a way to stop going to work every day, so I can focus on evaluating this rosin...
Ok, after all these positive reviews I could not resist ording one of each.
I'm a little skeptical though with reviews like this.
I was running a "dusty" very smooth Rosin (Bernardel Light Rosin) which I still like for some things.
But I've been on Hill Dark since the end of last summer and really like it. I'd really want to see how it beahves over summer before changing anything.
I was skeptical switching to Hill Dark because of comments of more bite, grit, crunch. Where my current rosin was so "Smooth". We'll now I get it.
I WANT some crunch now. But reviews like this concern me a little. My teacher is pushing me to get even more "crunch".
But every time I try an experiment I learn something. So $8.00 seems like a cheap lesson whether I stick with it or not. I'm also little concerned with how it behaves long term (seasonally and it's effect on bow hair)
That Hill Dark would take weeks to come off naturally and I don't think a cloth would remove much.

Looks around nervously and decides to jump on the bandwagon with both feet!!
I'm putting in my order today. I hope the magic wears through more than just my bow and turns me into the best fiddle player of all time!!
MRosin - Posted - 04/05/2011: 19:28:51
MikeyBoy, thank you for the excellent feedback and description of Magic Rosin!! Ha...! Still working on the Michael Cleveland 1.2 rosin.
mswlogo and abeeric, thank you for the orders! Will get them out asap!
Sarah
justme - Posted - 04/07/2011: 04:03:59
i got a cake a week ago. Very nice. I like it much better than the Hill i've used for 6 years.
abeeric - Posted - 04/11/2011: 14:21:11
Lol, whatcha mean get those orders out ASAP?? I put an order in directly after that post, and recieved an email less than 4 hours later saying it had been shipped. How's that for service?? I was impressed!
(I'm the one you shipped to Alba Tx by the way)
I have my Magic Rosin and gave it a go today. I've been using Hill Dark and I was very very happy with it. I played my Hill out, not rosining up my bow while waiting for shipping, gave it a good wipe with a cloth today until no residue came off, then rosined up with the Magic Stuff!
Immediately out of my bow came the sounds of Charlie Daniels sawin on a fiddle and playin it hot!!
Ok, I wish. What did happen, I really like that rosin!! It plays very clear, smooth and my bow just grabbed onto my strings. No slick spots, just easy playing.
I am sold and hooked!! This is a solid rosin!! Thanks!!
jamieholmes - Posted - 04/12/2011: 04:16:43
Sorry if I mist it Sarah but would you tell me what the diffrence is between 1 and 2?.
MRosin - Posted - 04/12/2011: 20:25:34
justme, thank you for the nice comments...I'm glad you like the rosin!!
abeeric, ha! Magic Rosin 1.3 will be the Charlie Daniels formula...many thanks for the comments!
DSaul89, I'm glad you like the rosin, thank you!
jamieholmes, Magic Rosin 2 is stickier for cello, but many violinists and volists use it. I'm forgetting, did you get some of the MR2?
Thank you everyone so much for the comments. It's really helpful to hear people's descriptions and comments, and it's also really nice!! :)
Sarah

How about a jingle:
When your bow is slick and sloppy,
makes your playing come off floppy,
get the cake that folks all rave,
magic rosin is what you'll crave.
or
Magic Rosin hits the spot,
a few short rubs...not a lot,
gets your bow all extra grabby,
now if it just took off that extra flabby
Works with Uncle Dave Macon's Sail Away Ladies. Insert "Sail away, Ladies, sail away" between each line of the verse ("When your bow...."). The chorus ("Magic Rosin hits....") works fine as is. How much do i get paid for singing it on stage, thereby bringing you tons of busiiness? ;-)
dunaif - Posted - 04/13/2011: 09:56:25
Add me to the chorus of those singing Magic Rosin's praises. Just received mine last week and I like it a lot!
rastewart - Posted - 04/13/2011: 22:01:40
Well, after all this, I couldn't resist. I've put in an order for one of each and will be sending a money order in the next few days for the shipping and handling. Looking forward to trying it, and maybe I'll be inspired to contribute some doggerel!
(Or catterel if the moon is right.)
While I'm thinking of it, is it MR 1 or MR 2 that will make me sound like Stéphane Grappelli? ![]()

mswlogo - Posted - 04/17/2011: 15:50:47
Keep in mind, I still consider myself a newbie.
But I guess, I'll be the only person to say, I'm sticking with Hill Dark for now.
I used to use Gustave Bernardel (Light) which was very smooth and dusty. Magic Rosin #1 is definitely in that direction.
I don't know which Rosin most folks are talking about but I saw plenty of dust with #1 and #2.
I'm also amazed not one person mentioned the cake is about half the size of a normal sized cake.
I'm also puzzled about folks comments on color. It has the normal light Rosin Color to me.
So it's about half the size for half the price with free shipping is the way I look at it.
Between the ultra thin cloth and small size I found it a little awkward to handle (especially on fresh cake with no groove).
Cloth kept slipping under hair as I rosined
It is very sweet sounding, very smooth, if that's what your looking for.
I find it just a bit too slick. Less Volume, Less bite, Less Grip and Dusty.
I get little slips and squeaks with it.
I only briefly tried Magic #2 (I just put it on top of #1). It feels IDENTICAL.
Same color, same color cloth, same dust, same grip. It felt just as tacky to the finger and going on.
I wonder if I some how I got TWO #1's. The "Cans" definitely says #1 vs #2.
I have no regrets trying it. That's how we all learn by experimenting with Strings, Rosins, Bows, Setups etc.

Bud, that be awesome to hear you sing the awesome Fiddle Hangout Magic Rosin jingles to the tune of Sail Away Ladies!! Open to any suggestions!!
dunaif, I'm glad you like the rosin! Thank you!
rastewart, thank you for your order! Would love to hear your doggerel!
Oliver, thank you for your nice comments! I'm glad you like it!
Richard, great! We're coming out with the new size sometime in May. I'll let you know
mswlogo, thanks for your comments and description. I wonder if somehow you might not have gotten a Magic Rosin 2. There should be a pretty discernable difference between Magic Rosin 1 and Magic Rosin 2. I can send you another Magic Rosin 2 if it seems like there isn't much difference between the two.
We're coming out with a new larger size in May. The introductory size will continue with new packaging, that some people have already gotten (click-clack packaging!) We started with a smaller size to cater to the instrumentalists who either break their rosin all the time (many students and professionals!!), or who like to have fresh rosin every few months.
We are a very small startup company and want everyone to be happy! If anyone has any questions or concerns or other comments, please let me know! You can write to me at magicrosin@gmail.com or visit magicrosin.com and send a message through the website.
Fiddle Chick, you can order Magic Rosin online at magicrosin.com
Thanks!!

I finally got around to trying the #2, and while I seem to get a nice full rich tone with it, it is much too grabby for me. I actually got fatigued rather quickly trying to play fast tunes because I had to work so hard. If I had the luxury of having a second bow for slow tunes, it would be great to use the #2 only for waltzes and such. I cleaned it off and am now back to number 1 - which I still love! the number 2 is going to my friend who plays the bass...
Minim Miser - Posted - 05/13/2011: 13:49:22
Thought I'd just post a few thoughts as I've been trying Magic Rosin now for about 5 weeks. I'm pretty surprised to find the thread has grown this long...
Well, I'm very impressed. Usually new rosin seems good for a couple of weeks, then you find its faults, but I'm still loving this stuff. These are the things I find distinctive about it:
1) A really good grip, but it plays smoothly. Just like the man said it would.
2) One small application lasts a long time. In fact it seems to get better after a couple of hours of playing. I haven't had any problem with applying too much as I just haven't felt the need to apply more.
3) Not very dusty, so it stays on the bow and doesn't mess up the fiddle.
4) It rapidly coats the strings and is relatively hard to remove from them. However, this doesn't seem to affect the sound (in fact it may even improve it), so not really a problem.
I'd say all my problems with slipping bows, bum notes, etc, etc, have pretty much vanished since switching to this rosin. That occasional flick on to the E string now sounds true every time. My fiddle is a pretty responsive and (probably) unforgiving instrument, but this rosin has really made it much easier to play. It's become much simpler to get a sweet tone and the attack, when you need it, is awesome - but it leads into a sweet-sounding note, not a harsh sound like I've been getting previously with grabby rosins.
So Magic Rosin now has No. 1 place in my fiddle case. Until something better comes along...
rastewart - Posted - 05/13/2011: 13:58:50
Well, Sarah, I finally sent my order for one each, the old-fashioned way, by snail-mail with a money order. I think I sent it around the 26th or 27th of April, so it should be somewhere in the pipeline there. Looking forward to trying it--maybe it will give me that extra little incentive I need to practice more regularly!
~Rich
fiddlerjoebob - Posted - 05/13/2011: 15:17:53
I might be the onlyest person who dosnt like it. Guess I will give it a second try sometime. Too grabby, too dusty and it made my fiddle sound harsh. I think the sound is usually more like soft butter. I couldn't get away from it. Might have been any number if things...including me as you might summize. I will have another go at it one of these days.
richdissmore - Posted - 05/13/2011: 17:16:53
did you use rosin for violin or the real graby cello rosin once you use the violin rosin don,t need as much presser on the bow ligth up and it should be fine
richdissmore - Posted - 05/14/2011: 11:52:49
Sarah did your new shipment of larger rosin cakes come in . i need 6 cakes of rosin gifts for firends thank you my phone 262-634-8149

Interestingly, I recently ordered a chinese violin and it came with what looks like the very exact rosin as a freebee, same packaging, just it didn't have the sticker on it... just saying...

MikeyBoy:
I'm glad you like Magic Rosin 1. #2 can be really grippy! That would be great if you happen to share the #2 with your bass player friend. We don't have as much feedback from bass players!
Minim Miser:
Thank you for the great feedback and descriptions of Magic Rosin!
Rich:
I'll send your order right out! Last of the Magic Rosins for right now (we're sold out)
fiddlerjoebob:
I'm sorry Magic Rosin isn't quite right for you. It can definitely be grabby! I'm a cellist so that was important to me to get that grab. Thank you for the feedback.
Richard:
We're working furiously with the new manufacturer to get the new sizes etc. It's been such a great adventure...we just started as a garage/kitchen table business and have been so grateful for the success, but now we have to ensure that we can deliver larger quantities in the same consistency. So we are working with a new manufacturer. I'll update very soon!
Oscar:
It wouldn't be the same formula as Magic Rosin, but it might be a similar/same plastic case. When we started, we just went with what was available in case, and liked the smaller size. There are a number of companies that use the same small case. We are now using the clic clac container which is much better I think! And it's reusable. I'll update soon when it's available again.
Thanks everyone and congratulations to Autumn Perreault, winner of the carbon fiber bow!
Sarah

Thanks, Sarah! I know moving from a tabletop operation, as you say, to something larger has to have its own challenges. Good luck!

Update to my previous review:
I'm no longer having to rosin more frequently; apparently that was related to the other rosin still present on the hair. I do still have to be really careful not to over-rosin with the Magic Rosin — old habits die hard!
~ Gwen
MRosin - Posted - 11/14/2011: 17:50:21
Hi everyone, it's been a long time! Magic Rosin is finally back for sale with a new formula. It is made of only modified and purified pine rosins with no other ingredients or fillers. I'm really excited and have been testing it with Minnesota Orch. people and St. Paul chamber orch people and have gotten the kind of reviews I was hoping for. Violinists seem to really like it, used sparingly. I sincerely believe the old Magic Rosin users and other rosin users will be pleased! We have a mini size for $4.00. I'm actually making the rosin myself. If you find it's not right, you can send it back and we'll refund your money!
It's also almost clear, so you can see sparkle paper and holograms, etc....!
Thanks everyone!

Hi Sarah,
I'm new here but just ordered a cake and I'm excited. I've been using a grody old piece of rosin for waaay to long. I think it's about time someone innovated the formula for rosin. Good luck with your business - it looks like it's exploding!

Hi, everyone. I have been lurking on this forum for a few months now absorbing words of wisdom. I thought that it would be appropriate for my first post to be in praise of Magic Rosin. Even as a new fiddler I can tell an immediate positive improvement in tone and control with Magic Rosin though it is best to start out on the light side, a little goes a long way. Thanks for a wonderful product and exceptional customer service.

TFNewberry, thank you for the great feedback and nice message! I'm glad you like Magic Rosin and honored to have it be the subject of your first post. Happy Holidays!!
