Along the lines of the Virtual Fiddle Festival thread, I made a list of the top 100 'most added' tunes from thesession.org culled out the tunes that aren't in the tradition and will pick one at random for FHO members to learn or share their own versions. If you need the sheetmusic here's a link thesession.org/tunes/display/5
This month's tune is the jig The Blarney Pilgrim, a staple tune in the tradition.
Looking forward to this, hope there's support for it.

Excellent, now I'll have twice as many songs to learn a month late to post each time :-)
But seriously it will be fun, thanks for starting it.

dang... too slow... i'll have to work it up to speed and try again...
NCarolinaFiddler - Posted - 07/01/2012: 18:45:43
I'm going to try this, but my versions may sound more like Old Time than Irish only because I'm not very good at playing Irish tunes.
fiddlepogo - Posted - 07/01/2012: 20:58:06
Brad,
I thought... I know Blarney Pilgrim... then I tried to play it, and had TROUBLE... I haven't been playing Irish enough.
So I played jigs for nearly an hour. I may never get around to posting an attempt at an Irish Trad tune, but at least this is inspiring PRACTICE!!!
mad baloney - Posted - 07/02/2012: 06:44:58
@ ross - The tempo is fine, The Blarney Pilgrim sounds good on the slow side - I don't think you're playing it excessively slow tho.
@ ncfiddler & Fiddlepogo - it's more of a chance to practice, learn get familiar with these tunes - I'd like to encourage people to post - a take on the tune from another angel can open up another dimension to the tune.
I plan on re-recording the tune with more volume, maybe later today.
RossClan - Posted - 07/02/2012: 08:36:55
@ Brad- whew! thanks... I tried to get it up to classic jig speed but I couldn't get the trebled notes in- I can get it almost to 110, which seems fast enough to me, or I could do a more basic version almost at classic jig speed and I might post that just because it keeps me practicing!
The pooch, on the other hand, can do it at any speed. He's got talent!
Brad- your version sounds smooth- does your playing tend to imitate a regional style?
And I, too, hope a few more people post because I like to hear different versions. I can buy all the books in the world and listen to the sometimes pitiful recordings that come with the books (one of my Irish Fiddle book CDs has half the tunes played a beginner speed-- not helpful to me!
I'm still looking for an easy (cheap) way to hear lots of tunes played by traditional experts. I just hate to spend a fortune on downloads...

Lately I've been borrowing things from the Sliabh Luachra area in my playing, Mountains between Co's Cork and Kerry they use long smooth bowing and those unisons where I slide up to the unison. They play a lot of polkas and slides.
Here's a link to a bunch of top-notch out of print recordings of people from that area
ceolalainn.blogspot.com/search...h+luachra
I have been borrowing things from Julia Clifford and Dennis Murphy.
Up til recently I had been focused on NY/Sligo music - some long bowings there too - but there's also lots of puncuated single bows mixed in. For a contrast this list of links is mostly dominated by that style

Love the dog RossClan.....awesome!!! Your fiddlin' was excellent too..even though you have a live-in critic. Mine takes as much of the music as he can take and then barks at me to let him out.
I'm in for this too...printed out my sheet music, listened to the various versions...ready to GO!! Thanks for doing this Mad....we should put this also on the Irish Trad group as well!!

Nice versions of Blarney Pilgrim on those last two links, Brad. I especially liked the mandolin version. Nice pace on it. So many people try to rush a tune like that, and lose the essence of it.

I'm an old-time fiddler, but that doesn't keep me from loving this tune dearly. Thanks for suggesting it! I learned it off the page from O'Neill's Dance Music of Ireland. I'd never heard it before I started playing it, and I have no clue about Celtic techniques, but this is the way it comes out. I've never gotten the B part under my fingers so I only play the A and C. My old Markneukirchen trade fiddle.

It's August 1st, so I'll be picking a random tune for August - but it doesn't close this out if anyone wants to post a link to themselves or someone else doing this tune.
Thanks to everybody who contributed, listened or lurked.

Just found this thread now, and since it's a tune I play fairly regularly with my local music buddies I figured I'd have a go at recording it. Here's how it came out.

There are Irish tunes I can "hear" some ornamentation for, but this isn't one of them... very plain... and very short, because I can't get more that two times through without crashing and burning!!!![]()

I don't see the edit button on my last post. But I loaded my recording at YouTube. So, this link may work better.
