My first bowing podcast- the reality is that the raw version wasn't even QUITE this smooth- and it's really not very smooth at all- I used Audacity to edit out various coughs, "ummmms" "uhhh"s and pauses.
I even copied and pasted in the RIGHT pattern name twice when I said the wrong one!!!
If it seems to end suddenly, it got interrupted by a cell phone call, but the last part wasn't working well anyway, so that was a good place to end it even if it doesn't SOUND finished.
I wasn't about to do it all over again!
BE THANKFUL it wasn't LONGER!!!

One of the simpler cross-tuned tunes I do.
But I couldn't remember the title to it- but Mike Bryant could!
It's Marcus Martin's Cotton Eyed Joe, but much simplified- I think hearing the similar Tater Patch triggered the memory and I half-remembered it.... and I even think I had in on my tune list as Tater Patch for a while.
Might make a good version for a beginner to learn.
AbEbAbEb. You think I'm weird huh??? Of COURSE you do!
Well.... in the olden days, they didn't HAVE tuners.
They tuned by feel, and had gut strings.
AEAE probably would've busted a gut string or two.
GDGD sounds rubbery bandy on the high strings.... the A string probably would have been worse if it was gut.
I'm guessing going by feel and sound and what was good for their strings, they ended up in AbEbAbEb more often than not, give or take a few "cents".

I was goofin' around with the fiddle named Carthy, pushin' the tempo.
I can only get this fast on tunes I know really well, and well rehearsed downbowing patterns are helping keep it as steady as it is... likewise a relaxed wrist. Likely suspects are Sawshuffle, Smoothshuffle and Syncoshuffle- listen for them! I'm sure Michael Cleveland can play a LOT faster!
I normally don't LIKE to play this fast, I prefer slow and bouncy, and so does my wife, but you never know when some hotshot young banjo picker will want to push up the tempo on you!

Golden Slippers- first in G with a bit of singing on the chorus, then in D as a fiddle tune. I often perform this for seniors. Fiddle: "Booker", mics: Heil PR35 top and PR30 below, panned hard right and left. Odd- the mp3 sounds a bit distorted in the low part, didn't in Audacity... weird!
(This is the corrected export with both tracks... the left track is the lower mic and is softer, but it's there!)

Some might say it's not "Old Time" but I'm guessing it got played by more than a few Old Time fiddlers back in the late 1800's, and this is my sense of how it might have been played.
I've tagged it "other" since some OT fans don't seem to like Stephen Foster.
Bowing note: I'm pretty sure I bow this "anywhichway the melody goes"... which SOME people call "sawstroke".... not me, though!

Due to flu and guitar gigs, about 3 scattered days of practice in the last week... so be kind!
Studio Projects B1 at eye level and arm's length from the treble side and a Naiant X-Q at top of head height and a foot from my head on the bass side of my fiddle.

Due to index finger cramping, I switched to Zyex synthetics AND tuned the fiddle down a half step. Who woulda thunk it? I LIKE IT!!!
Maybe not so good for jams though!

Starts in D, modulates to G.

This fragment (first part) of an obscure patriotic instrumental Revolutionary era piece is useful as an exercise because the first phrase (after the pickup note) ascends a complete octave of the major scale.
The rest of the melody is a fairly good workout, with some unusual jumps.

Yup, an Old Time tune AND an Irish jig.
Not really a medley, I'm just playing Arkansas Traveler once through to establish that, yes indeed, it IS me!!!
Cook in the Kitchen is my favorite Irish jig, so I play it a lot. Not sure if I could switch styles as easily to any other Irish tune.
And I'm not sure if this attempt qualifies as Irish Trad (I doubt it, actually) or will be derided as "Celtic". But I tried!!!
Same recording setup as before with the two Naiant X-Qs, no effects.

Attempt at Irish Trad by a mostly Old Time fiddler- there are Irish tunes I can "hear" the ornaments for, but this isn't one of them... so- VERY plain.

This is one of the few tunes I've learned fresh
in the last couple of years, and the first one to get up to speed. Annoyingly long title!
This one is unusual in that the main bowing is neither Sawshuffle nor Syncoshuffle! See the bowing threads for suspects! ;^)

Dedicated to GROUNDHOGPEGGY!!!!
A banjo song I think I learned from one of Art Rosenbaum's banjo books back in the early 1970's.
I always wanted to do it on fiddle cause I really like the tune, but I never found a way that sounded right.
I almost accidentally started playing it in "high bass" crosstuning (AbEbAbEb) (that's AEAE down a half step- guitar and banjo, capo 1st fret and play in G)
a couple of weeks ago, and I love it.
Fiddle is Carthy, the new to me Knilling with the Perfection Pegs.
It's a little rough 'cause it's still new to me, but hey, it makes it sound even OLDTIMEY-ER!!!

Quebecified Irish tune that got popular in Southern California in the early '70s- now oldtimeyfied!
Heil PR-35 on the top (right channel) Samson R11 on the back (left channel). A little bit of Mazzoni's dynamic compression (stock Audacity settings) and a little AMBIENCE reverb for flavor.

John Henry, Round Peak style.
AEAE. Learned from the playing of Fred Cockerham, IIRC.
There are some bowings in this that I don't use for any other tune. 2/3 of the way through, a train went by, and I almost stopped playing, but then I realized it FIT!

I found this on an old cassette tape-
I recorded it shortly after I learned it at a festival in 1976 so I would remember it- the low part is shaky, and it falls apart at least once.
This is back when I was mostly a Nashville Shuffle fiddler- some of you will probably like this better than my current playing! ;^)
Since it was recorded on my Norelco Phillips cassette recorder, the quality is pretty low, natch!

Old Dan Tucker is the first thing I ever learned on the fiddle-
played it with double stops from the start.
Easy. Recently I heard it was the first tune John Summers played on fiddle, too. I have a Samson R11 dynamic underneath and to the left catching the bottom plate,
and the Heil PR35 thru a Behringer Tube Mic 100 preamp catching the sound coming from the top.

Two songs I play on fiddle for children and seniors- usually I sing with them, but I thought I'd spare you the barnyard noises, and just give you the fiddle parts of the two songs in a medley.
Lots of Smoothshuffle, Sawshuffle and Syncoshuffle.
I haven't been performing or practicing much with the neodymium magnets, but it sure records better with them on the bridge!

Two Naiant X-Q small diaphragm condensers (I found the other one- one in front, but one high and to the right, the other lower to the left) into the ART USB Dual Pre. Played over the monitors, my wife agrees this is what my fiddle actually sounds like. (Booker the Knilling Bucharest) Dry, no reverb. Room is carpeted, acoustic ceiling that's been painted over, and drapes at one end, but not much on the walls.

As common as dirt, or turkey on the table at Thanksgiving,
but I love it. Great tune for Sawshuffle and Syncoshuffle.
Samson R11 catching the bottom plate sounds, the Heil PR35 catching the top plate, but no preamp. Sounds good, but a little thinner than with the Behringer tube mic preamp used on Old Dan Tucker.
