My Instruments: Two Knilling 4KF models: One, labeled "Bucharest" dated 2006 and bought new. It's sounding sweet. Another, bought on eBay is possibly from about 2000, does not say "Bucharest" and smells funny when the weather gets warm- could it be of Chinese origin? I go back and forth which I like better- right now the smelly one is my cross-tuned fiddle... which is what I bought it for actually! The Romanian one is strung with Thomastik Precision Lights (steel), the other with Prims, and I use Kaplan Premium rosin. I recently bought an Eastman VL100 still strung with D'Addario Pro Artes. It's mellower than the other two, and is especially well suited for waltzes, Irish tunes, Bluegrass, and probably Swedish tunes too.
Favorite Bands/Musicians: Formative influences: William Stepp, Luther Strong, Tommy Jarrell, Bunt Stephens, Franklin George, Earl Collins, Tom Sauber, John W. Summers, Jean Carignan, Hubbard & Molk. Many of the key ones were downbow fiddlers. Recently I like Erynn Marshall, Matt Brown, Chirps Smith, and Michael Garvin... I like the Bruces- Greene and Molsky too, also Jehile Kirkhuff's Pennsylvania Old Time fiddling. Bluegrass: I heard the Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys and the Bluegrass Cardinals, also Byron Berline with somebody or other at McCabe's Guitar shop in the early '70s. I also had an LP of the Stanley Brothers, and found a cassette version of the same album a couple of years back. So I'm really mostly into the older Bluegrass styles. I can sing the bass part (barely) in the quartet singing since I'm a low baritone. Even more recently (YouTube is expanding my fiddling mind!) I like the Quebe Sisters Band (yeah I know their not Bluegrass!), Craig Duncan, Graham Townshend, Gilles Apap, and the Voetberg Family Band.

One of the two most common Swedish fiddle tunes,
used for the Allspel for massed fiddling.
That's not the Swedish title of course!

This is one of the few tunes I've learned fresh
in the last couple of years, and the first one to get up to speed. Annoyingly long title!
This one is unusual in that the main bowing is neither Sawshuffle nor Syncoshuffle! See the bowing threads for suspects! ;^)

Quebecified Irish tune that got popular in Southern California in the early '70s- now oldtimeyfied!
Heil PR-35 on the top (right channel) Samson R11 on the back (left channel). A little bit of Mazzoni's dynamic compression (stock Audacity settings) and a little AMBIENCE reverb for flavor.

John Henry, Round Peak style.
AEAE. Learned from the playing of Fred Cockerham, IIRC.
There are some bowings in this that I don't use for any other tune. 2/3 of the way through, a train went by, and I almost stopped playing, but then I realized it FIT!

Not sure where I first learned this- Krassen's Appalachian Fiddle book and Hollow Rock LP are possibilities.

I found this on an old cassette tape-
I recorded it shortly after I learned it at a festival in 1976 so I would remember it- the low part is shaky, and it falls apart at least once.
This is back when I was mostly a Nashville Shuffle fiddler- some of you will probably like this better than my current playing! ;^)
Since it was recorded on my Norelco Phillips cassette recorder, the quality is pretty low, natch!

Old Dan Tucker is the first thing I ever learned on the fiddle-
played it with double stops from the start.
Easy. Recently I heard it was the first tune John Summers played on fiddle, too. I have a Samson R11 dynamic underneath and to the left catching the bottom plate,
and the Heil PR35 thru a Behringer Tube Mic 100 preamp catching the sound coming from the top.

Recorded with a Naiant X-Q mic above and to the front about an arm's length, and with a Studio Projects B1 below and to the left. My Knilling Bucharest has the Thomastik Precision Lights on it,
and the mp3 was exported at the highest bitrate I could.

Rockingham Cindy, Rochester Schottische, and Susannah Gal.
My personal take on Tommy Jarrell's style and 3 of his tunes-
NOT a transcription, but based on a lot of listening and
getting to watch him in person a lot in 1976.
I found if I imitated the motions, I got the sound pretty close!
One thing I have to do to get the feel is lead the beat sometimes... I'm not REAL comfortable with it, since the only time I do it is when I'm doing Tommy Jarrell tunes.
Anyway, I'm teetering on the edge, and about 3:03, I fall off! ;^D.

As common as dirt, or turkey on the table at Thanksgiving,
but I love it. Great tune for Sawshuffle and Syncoshuffle.
Samson R11 catching the bottom plate sounds, the Heil PR35 catching the top plate, but no preamp. Sounds good, but a little thinner than with the Behringer tube mic preamp used on Old Dan Tucker.

I think I had this in my head before I ever picked up a fiddle- I think I'd heard it on some cowboy movie when I was a kid. Nobody seems to play it anymore, but to me, it's everything an Old Time waltz should be.
