I've found numerous renditions of Larry O’Gaff’s in G and D. I've always been enamored with the vocal song Squid Jigging Ground which is based on it and it looks like an easy first jig to learn. Not sure which version to learn first, the G version or the D version. Anyone familiar with the tune who can recommend which version to start on?
I play it in G, and have always heard it in G. In G, the highest note is the high-B, whereas in D, the highest note would be the high-F#, which would pitch the whole tune a bit low for the fiddling traditions I'm stuck in. However, you might like the sound of it in D more ... or maybe it's different in other traditions .....
