This has been on my bucket list for years, and it couldn’t have been better!
Though I was nervous, my tandem jump partner, explained every step clearly and kept me focused on everything that was going on. There were two of us first time jumpers on the plane, and five liscensed solo jumpers.
My stomach was flipping as we climbed to 13500 feet. But calmed down as I watched the experienced jumpers go off as calmly as-if they were stepping into the deep end of a pool. We scooched along the floor of the plane and I sat there with my feet dangling outside the plane, I felt strangely calm...then we fell out. The feeling during the free fall, which only lasted less than a minute is weird. Your falling at 100 mph, but your mind isn’t processing it and you feel like your floating. When the chute deploys ( which is a strong jolt) you slowly and peacefully descend for several minutes, enjoying a beautiful bird’s eye view of the scenery.
The landing went without a hitch.Would I do it again? In a New York minute!
Wow! Congratulations...for getting the nerve up, and for enjoying the experience, and for being here to tell about it...lol. I gotta admit I've never even been in a plane because of just watching them in the sky...yikes for me, let alone jumping. But great admiration for those who do, for work or recreation.
I knew an old lady named Nellie in one of the places where I grew up who always sat behind the bushes with her double barrel laid across her lap. A little ways away they would sometimes have people parachuting on an old moonshine runway for certain celebrations, etc. And she always growled out about how she dared one of them whippersnappers to land on her place and she'd shoot 'em before they got to the ground...lol. Of course she just always freaked me out because my great aunt and I would walk along the railroad tracks to sell eggs and she jump out to talk to my great aunt and I'd have to try to hide behind my super skinny aunt while Nellie growled about how she was gonna shoot the next so and so who did this and that...lol...well the story could get longer but I realize, once again, I've veered way off topic.
But I am in admiration of your bravery and glad you enjoyed the experience. Thanks for sharing it with us. If you ever hear of me planning such an "outing," I'll probably die of a heart attack before I even make it onto the plane...lol.
I remember reading in an American sky diving magazine about an elderly lady that did a tandem jump for her birthday. I’m not sure if it was for her 102nd birthday or not but it was a great age, certainly a century. The amazing thing is that she did a tandem for her 80th birthday and vowed to do a tandem for every birthday since. As you would expect she was treated with extreme care!
