I'm loving Duck River - and Ducks on the Millpond I guess sweet swimming birds charmed old fiddlers - at least they headline a lot of tunes... Also Dry & Dusty
"Devil's in the pretty girls when they take a notion." There's an excellent observation. Do you know "Ducks on {or in) the Pond" from Henry Reed? I think of it as an autumnal tune.
I've been so lazy lately, more often than not I'll just go to the page in my Irish fiddle book that's already open on the music stand, and play the first tune that catches my eye.
I've started messing with Jerusalem Ridge a little bit by ear. The last section has me tripped up. I am supposed to be working on June Apple but still can't keep the Georgia Shuffle going...having fun though :)
carlb - I came across this reference some time ago that looked interesting, but never followed up on it. If you have access, it might be useful: jstor.org/stable/23338975
Mrs. Jamieson's Favourite, I heard it playing in the Berk Fiddle Fest post here on FHO, looked it up because I really like slow tunes also, found out it is called a Scottish Slow Air and found out this sounds good on my fiddle in EBEB. When I play the second string I can choose to let the first string ring with it OR third one, it has interesting options in crosstuning. There is a nice melody and harmony part on Northatlantic Tune List. I'll keep that harmony part for later on.
And this is how another discovery by hanging out here brightened my day :-)
( I am shy about introducing new tunes at the session, but maybe I can get this one played someday...I wish I wish...think it would be great on flute/whistle too...)
Tuned up my "ugly fiddle" that was idle for a long long stretch. Boy, it sure does ring nice.
Played Shenandoah Falls, Top o' Cork Road, Fischer's Hornpipe in G and D, and then played Bound to Have a Little Fun for about ten minutes just because.
Oak Ridge Stomp, (Rhys Jones & Christina Wheeler) Little Brown Jug, (Rhys Jones, Jeff Miller, and Jim Nelson) Old Dan Tucker, (Rhys Jones, Jeff Miller, and Jim Nelson)
...I like his fiddling. Been working on these off and on for while, and revisitng them now.
We also do I Can't Stop Loving You. Don Gibson didn't even graduate high school, but he sure caused a lot of belt buckles to get polished on the dance floor.
