@NCNotes, I found the recording on slippery hill :-) Before I practice it myself I listen to Clyde Davenport playing this tune first, that helps an incredible lot.
@DougD, I tested a lot of DDAD options, on my very old fiddle it sounds best to me in CCGC <3

I have created a fiddle practice rule (!!!) for myself:  if I know all the notes and  when it doesnt't sound good enough within the first five to ten minutes after I I pickrd up one of my fiddles, then I stop and go do something completely different till I feel like I can give it another try. My neighbours will be thankful :-p

I was making it way too complicated for myself by trying to figbt myself on bad days or moments!

That's a good idea for your practice routine, Anja. No need to create frustration.
I noticed that the recording at Slippery Hill is a different one than the one NCnotes linked to. They seem to sound the same though. I don't think Clyde would have been likely to launch into variations on this tune though. Its not really that kind of tune, and he wasn't really that kind of player either.
BTW, there's quite a bit of video of Clyde on YouTube, including a whole series at his home. Don't know if he played this tune though.

I just looked this tune up in the Fiddler's Companion, where its described as a version of "The Pateroller Song." I definitely hear that in the low part, but I'm not really familiar with the othr part of "Pateroller."

I found out the same Doug. The site NCNotes found has two Clyde Davenport versions, the one I found and the other one.

Today I worked on the tune again..Overall I'm happy with tone and sound so far, the atmosphere, but now I have to work on rhytmic symmetry. I think I have to be careful that in one playthrough I have to bow the equal parts exactly the same. Maybe then another playthrough I can try something else, learned this from Steve/ farmerjones.
Takes me some effort to make this a goal. I really need to learn to make decisions and stick to them.
Maybe that's also the reason why I cannot yet keep up with Davenport's tempo.
I liked the variations in the sheet music, so this is what you can hear in the recording of today's attempt.

Anyway, this is the plan:

Goal 1: rhythmic consistency (maybe this is just the perfect tune for this)
Goal 2: add some tricks
Goal 3 : Do something very Edn Hammons' Queen of the Earth and Child of the Skies- like with it.

My friend Roy will love to hear I picked a Kentucky tune :-)

I've been working on some Mississippi Sheiks tunes with some success. I have Stop and Listen Blues and Back to Mississippi sounding pretty good. Now I'm working on West Jackson Blues. I'm off to a good start, but it's going to take a long time to really get the sound right.

Good choices. Get that down and you've got something there.

Just started on Prince William, mostly inspired by hearing Reed Martin's banjo version, which then led me to Roger Sprung's banjo version on YouTube.

Also starting Dwight Lamb's "Oh Susannah" which has added parts of something I can't identify as a 3rd part. fun stuff.

@farmerjones: Steve, your playing sounds very unique to me, very stylish repertoire you have...Rubber 'Donut' is excellent this way. You have outdone yourself! I recognize Chinese Breakdown also, probably from former recordings.

Today just working on previous DDAD tunes. I created a new task: make a USB stick with all of the old recordings I feel very attracted to, for when I am driving :-D

Great! I found a new and very cool DDAD tune: Norman Edmonds ' Kingdom come (and hurray it is crooked :-D) Needed something new in DDAD while also working on Cruel Willy and the rest.

I don't think I ever stayed so long in the same tuning as these days in DDAD.

I haven't played since the 25th.
I dumped the results on 'sound off.'
I dunno, I'm not feeling it. Hope it comes back.

Today again Kingdom Come, not exactly like Norman Edmonds ofcourse, but I think I did ok.
I guess one is DDAD and other C#C#G#C#, should use my tuner to know for sure
And then it's really time I leave DDAD tuning for a while, I feel obsessed.

Learning a Shetland hornpipe composed by Chris Stout … someone at sesh has asked for it on two separate weeks, and she bravely played it alone last time - so I have set out to keep her company. This tune is gorgeous!

Hamnataing by Fiddler’s Bid

Hamnataing on Irish flute

Last week, we had a daughter (harp) and dad (guitar) duo! So nice to see them playing side by side.
We also had two visitors from Roanoke, VA! (whistle & dulcimer).

Nice tune NCNotes! I wish I had a mountain dulcimer ( or a mountain dulcimer player :-p) to experiment with :-D

Yea she was a good player…in the “groove” and fit right in! At one point the fiddle player next to me got up and danced a jig…love it when people get up and dance! I also love it when I look over at another player and both our knees/feet are bouncing away in the same beat, feeling it. (Er, that is probably the closest I’ll get to dancing, myself…I’m pretty uncoordinated.)

Yesterday Fiddlehed's Jason posted and excellent video lesson on I'll Fly Away, with chords ... and strum machine makes a lot more sense now :-D:

Then today I found this video lesson, never found it before but here it is :

This guy plays The Blackest Crow in ADAD, this is keeping me busy this morning. The tune is way more beautiful played cross tuned!

Having fun today, nice at a slow speed, good for my intonation and ear for nuances.

I just noticed I still had some money on my prepaid card, so I shopped that The Blackest Crow Lesson, it was an option to just buy this lesson. Cool! I love this version !!!

I decided to become a shopping fiddler, whenever I hear something I want to learn in the form of a video lesson I'll invest a bit. I'll just shop the tune versions I want to learn :-D

Scary. Whatever tune or tuning I try today , I sound like it's the first time ever I hold a violin and a bow  :-/ I tried for a short while - many different things - but today my fiddle  feels  completely bewitched.

Maybe this is the result of weeks and weeks - I think several months even-  only DDAD.

I'd say it is, for sure, the result of staying in Ddad for so long. The fiddle wants to sing in other keys too and your fingers need to practice those keys in order to remember where to go.

I've been working up a version of Roger Netherton's "Blue Moon Waltz," which he plays in cross A, in the key of Bb. It lays nicely there and has a great tonal quality with the added bonus of many double stop options.

I've been playing Shippensport... mostly from Burl Hammons. It's taking me a while to play it well which is odd considering that the parts are all parts of other tunes I know.

They do that sometimes even when kept in standard tuning.smiley
