The psu.edu site is excellent. I have visited it regularly for a while now.

You might also try my site. The tunes here are in standard notation and tablature. If you have tabledit, you can unselect the tablature option to view only the standard notation. That's what I do. If you don't have tabledit, you can download the pdf's, which are full scores with fiddle in standard and tab and clawhammer in tab only. There are accompanying midi's to go with the pdf's.

here's the irish site - each tune played 3 times thru with all repeats, notation right up there, and NOT at breakneck speed

- found a fun 'Virtual Session' with notation and backing tracks you can play along with. It's at bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/folk/sessions/

... Great if you don't have anyone to jam with and want to learn some Irish fiddle tunes. (random Lil's topic)

For Old Time stuff, check out the Fiddlers Companion site. The stuff comes in abc format, but there are several free converters online. If you have Tabledit (either the paid or free demo version, not the free viewer), you can import the abc file, convert it to either tab or notation, or both, and have it play a midi file.

OK, after being (politely) chastised, if you haven't found "The Fiddler's Companion" site already, here's the link:

I don't use the on-line converters - I use tabledit and import a copy of what I want to convert. That way, I can get a banjo tab and a fiddle notation and or any combination of instruments quickly and can use that as a starting point for my adaptations - plus, I have the built-in midi and don't have to hunt for an mp3.

I suggest you go HERE , where you can learn a lot about the entire ABC project and find information on how to make abc files, as well as a lot of useful resources, including some converters.

(here's the actual link: abc.sourceforge.net/resources.html )

Imagine my surprise opening John's site and seeing what looks like the Chirps Smith section.
We had a lot of fun out at the Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp. It was a pleasure meeting John and everyone else. Besides the midis he has mp3s of field recordings too.
An excellent resource! Now I know where to go when I can't quite recall a tune.

Just adding this: (other post-michael R-fiddler's comp. tunes)
another link for abc notation -what it is, looks like, and where to convert it to manuscript:

It's ABC notation. You'll find an explanation here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abc_notation

And a decent conversion engine here: concertina.net/tunes_convert.html

There are more, but I'll let others recommend their favorites.

FHO member Peet De Moor has a wonderful website full of classic bluegrass tunes in MIDI format from The Fiddler's Fakebook and other sources. They are very well done. There are files that play backup for you, too. It's at bluegrassmidisound.eu

Peet's homepage here at FHO is fiddlehangout.com/myhangout/ho...sp?id=376

He says "Next project will be the 'O'Neils' book, more than 1000 tunes."

He also posts free lessons (video, Audio, and Tab!)

Check it out

Thank the man for all his nice work!

Bump - dont forget to use the fiddler's compnion site for tune history -
(and re British old english, scots/ irish - there is a lot to be found there!)
I find lots of tunes that "came over and made it into old timey - and thence to bluegrass - too many too think off -

A great book is "the fiddlers tune book" (janet davis music has) as it has a lot of tunes that are played in both contexts today -

What's really great - (since I have both pdf/acrobat and NWC - it the fact that there are also 2nd and third harmonies in there - plus a total beginner's line (very simple) if you are at a jam!

This is really cool!

(I have added it to the free notatation/fiddle tunes online topic)

I have a lot of them, but this will save time arranging for other parts (when someone asks for sheet mucis!

It also prints out beautifully

If you have nwc, (and it is a free download - enough where you can read play hear and print)
you can also change the font (music staves bigger or smaller, if your vision is not into deciphering little notes -)

Hi James!

noteworthysoftware.com/composer/

I love this program - free download - And if bought, it's only 39.00 -
the demo version will read the files, and you can write, and save to midi -

Be sure to jump around the website - it's very cool!

I hope i'm not bein a pain but i play the banjo as well and i've been wondering if you might know of any midi converters that convert midis to tab,i've got one that converts to notation which is good for the fiddle but i find tabs a lot easier for the banjo.
