I learned this from Susie Goehring. I'm playing it here on mandolin and guitar, recorded into my computer with Cool Edit pro.

I love this tune, I heard it from Jeff Goehring's playing it. What tuning is it in for fiddle/madolin?

It's in D and the fiddle is tuned ADAE... My mandolin was tuned GDAE (standard). Yea, It's a nice tune...

I just found out there is a happy sounding third part to this, making this tune even happier. I have a recording of Jeff fiddling it with friends at a Thanksgiving jam party in 1993

I have that same recording, though haven't listened to it in quite a while....

Hey I'm curious Steve. You mentioned you recorded with Cool Edit. What kind of mic do you use, and do you use a pre-amp going into your computer to record. You've got a good clean sound. Wanted to see about getting me a PC mic to use without having to go through a pre-amp. They have some PC mics here at the local music store, but I'm not sure I want to spend all that money and come to find out I'll still need a pre-amp. I'm currently running a regular Peavey mic into my Zoom Minirecorder and using that as a pre-amp. From there I come out and into my computer. Get a pretty good signal that way, but would like to cut out the pre-amp if possible. Don't know if the USB mic will do that for me. Thought you might know.

Hey Jeff, well I'm not an expert at this, but I believe a "pre-amp" isn't really the issue. Instead it's that the microphone's analog output needs to be converted to a digital signal and so you have to have that converter somewhere in the chain. I think that there are some sophisticated sound cards you can install in a desktop PC that accept mic and line inputs of various type, but by far the easiest and most common are the wide array of USB converters. On these recordings of mine I used a couple Chinese condenser mics plugged into a Tascam US-122, (and from there a short USB cable to the computer). In Cool Edit Options you inform it to look for the 122 as an input device, it finds it, and it works. If , in Cool Edit, you chose the 122 as the output device, then you can plug headphones into the 122 while you're playing initially, and again when you're playing along with yourself... Most of these type devices need to use a power supply, but one of the great things about the Tascam is that it draws all the power it needs through the USB connection, so there is no external power supply to carry around or plug in...Also, the 122 has phantom power if the mics you want to use need it... It's just a thoroughly satisfying gadget! Anyway, here's a link to one on Ebay. This is the older model, which is the one I have... I assume the newer model is just as good or better. I paid around $200 for mine about 4 years ago, and that was a great deal at the time. Now you can commonly find the new model for about $129, and the one I have probably substantially under $100. Definitely worth it in my opinion. Here's that Ebay link... Good luck with it... you can email me if I can be of further help. http://cgi.ebay.com/TASCAM-US-122-AUDIO-MIDI-INTERFACE_W0QQitemZ190311437466QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2c4f72149a&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1234|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50
