I must have missed this when you first posted it. As soon as I read your description of the 'large man from TN (who played it on a viola)'....I knew it was Blaine Smith. James
Bryan told me of going to visit them (when James lived in Nashville, 1970s) and learning Chattanooga from him. As he put it, "He had huge hands and really bared down on that viola.....nothing subltle about it in the least." The home recordings of him and his neighbor, Eldie Barbie, are really some fine stuff. Nice job on it.
