Here's a Beast! A viola with a classical set up strung with BLACK DIAMOND fiddle strings (due to their length, the viola is 16.5") and cross-tuned ADAD. (Any wonder why I name this instrument 'Frank')??

Wow, sounds great! And your fingers survived the tune? I have a feeling it's a real tribute to your playing that I only heard one very slight squeak, given the strings you're using. :-)
This actually makes me curious to try one of the smaller violas this way. The sound is a bit darker and rounder than a conventional fiddle, I think.

I heard lots of squeaks!!
I agree that the sound is darker -- despite the 'fiddle' strings it still sounds like a viola to me. I think I would have tried this with better strings on a smaller viola if I had one available..
Thanks!

Dave,
You're right, it does still sound like a viola. That is really cool! I like it very much!

Thanks for your comment, brynmawr!
What I like about stringing a viola this way is the fact that the open strings correspond with those used by a violin -- i.e., although the sound may be darker / richer, the resonance created by the tuning of the instrument ('Italian' or otherwise) is similar. This helps make the viola sound more 'fiddly' than if it were played (stopped) in the higher registers with the conventional (CGDA) tuning...
