Learned at a festival in June of 2009. This is a 'no-name' eBay fiddle I call "Tom", since it had Thomastik Dominant strings on it when it arrived. (They've been removed, of course!). Tuning is DDAD

ooh, I like this one, and I've been looking for tunes in DDAD!
Dave, you really are getting some nice noise out of your fiddle. I really enjoy listening to you and hope you post more.

This is a variation on Boneparte's Retreat that comes from the playing of Burl Hammons. I just learned it from a Bruce Molsky video. On the B part he uses a noting similar to YOUR Soldier's Joy - a kind of "beef it's what's for dinner" vibe a la Aaron Copeland's Rodeo (influenced by Boneparte's?).

Hey there, ChickenMan!
I've seen the Molsky video and it WAS an influence (although I didn't use the 'alternate' ending to the 'B' part).
The simularities to SOLDIER'S JOY are coincidental -- don't all fiddle tunes (in some respects) sound alike??

Yeah there are many similarities, and I've heard that variation in Soldier's Joy before. I remember my first up close exposure to Irish music via a guitar player and harp player in Madison about 20 years ago. Everything was in G and after about 3 tunes I was lost in the similarities. I even asked them how they kept them separate in their heads! Now my wife says the same thing to me about the old fiddle tunes I've been collecting.
