I've played this forever it seems - don't know where I learned it, or what it's called - (key of G) not the greatest sound quality - I think the lyrics had something to do with "been all around this world"

Well, it sounds a lot like "Eight More Miles to Louisville" made famous by Grandpa Jones of Grand Old Opry fame - and I think he performed on "Hee Haw" as well.
There's one measure in the middle that's different though.

Jay - sis and slap me silly - !!!
However, the chorus to louisville is what I have always started on in jams, which of course is not included here -
I can not believe I have never connected these! - (yet I play them both )
Jen - struck dumb with amazement - (BLUSH BLUSH BLUSH!)

I can hear the "Eight More Miles To Louisville" alright,
but I can also hear some song that went
"And the soldier put it on." Perhaps an English song, I think.
The way tunes go, they may actually be related, which would
make blending them a natural thing to do.

it could be "been all around this world," or "hang me." highwoods string band does a great version of been all around this world
