I learned this tune back around 1984 from Vernon Riddle of Spartanburg, SC. Vernon learned it directly from Eck Robertson back in the late 1950s when Vernon was in the Air Force in Texas. Eck got the tune from a friend of his who was in the Civil War with Robert E. Lee and wrote this tune.

Just a note on the recording.... I recorded this at my house a couple months ago in the summer of 2008. I first played the fiddle by itself and recorded the fiddle track, then I played the guitar and added the guitar track. This tune is pretty much true to the way I originally learned it from Vernon Riddle back around 1984 when I used to play guitar with him at fiddle contests.

I think a tune very similar to this one is played in Missouri under the title "Willot's Hornpipe".

Ashley, I learned this tune from this recording and have included it in a CD entitled Civil War Songs of the South on the Green Hill Music label. The first pressing came out in February. I am now writing liner notes for future pressings and am giving you credit. Thank you for sharing the tune. Craig Duncan
