I learned this version from a fiddler from Pennsylvania, but it fits right in to the Missouri tradition. I recorded it on a $500 entry level fiddle as a demo of what the fiddle can do in the hands of a mediocre fiddler. The tune covers all four strings, and the trills give an idea of its responsiveness. Sorry about the lawnmower across the street. Sundays are like that. I recorded it in my living room on a Zoom H4 about 10 feet from me. All the echo is from the fiddle and the room, none added, and the only EQ is Audacity's standard "acoustic" curve.

Well there's nothing wrong with your fiddling - and the fiddle sounds nice too.
I've been at it 2 1/2 years now. Sure hope I sound as good as you do now when I finish the next six months... ;-)

one man's mediocre is another woman's "Dang! I wanna get up and dance!!!" (didn't even hear the lawnmower - LOL!
Both tunes great!
Responsive Yes! Sounds like it's got an underlying great thrum vibe in the wood - really tight!!! Nice!

Thanks, Paul - Gotta thank Fiddlerdi for a lot of the progress I've made, but I've got SUCH a long way yet to go!
Jenny - Thanks a lot! That's what OT is about to me - if it doesn't make your feet move, it's just not working! The more progress I make, the more I can see there is to do. Gotta lighten up the touch, get smoother, put some character in the notes, but if I'm makin your feet twitch (and not just to run and hide), I'm at least to step One.
You sure that underlying thrum isn't just the neighbor's lawn mower?

Hey Michael, these are sounding pretty good. Lots of improvement. I couldn't hear the lawnmower either and I was kind of disappointed. LOL. That fiddle does sound really good on here. I'm proud of you for posting them!

Hey, Diane - How'd your post get above mine?
Thanks for the compliments. I play rotten in the middle of a work day, but your coaching has been a big help, nonetheless. 'Taint easy unlearning stuff and then learning anew, especially when you're getting a little older..

Great playing of a great tune!
This tune was a standard of Canadian fiddle legend, Don Messer. It's contained in his Anthology of Favourite Fiddle Tunes.

Very good Michael! I was looking for this tune as I've been working on it and stumbled on yours. Not so sure about your novice rating.

Thanks! That was two years ago. I've been working hard, and improved a little, but I'll always be a novice. Don't have enough years left to be anything more.
I need to post some more tunes - I've got a lot of them that aren't here, and some very different versions, as well.

Hey, I enjoyed that. I like those old Ned Landry tunes. Its a bit different than the way I play it but very true to the original, and you certainly have a better sound than me. If you are a novice I think I need to find a lower grade for myself.

I really like that version of yours Woodwiz! I've been meaning to lean that tune myself. I'm startin to like those Missouri tunes. Have you heard John Hartford's rendition he does on his CD "Hamilton Iron works" ~Ky Fiddler
