A C&W version of one of my favorite hymns. I'm still learning the home studio thing. Good recording engineers don't get nearly the credit they deserve!

I loved it - I wanna move back to Texas.

You know I spent a year working at the "Bomber Plant" there in Fort Worth around 1977.  That's the time in which I got to hear Terry Morris, Benny Thomasson, Texas Shorty, and the rest.

I think Vernon Solomon was working there at that time as well - but I was too dumb to know it...

Johnny, that was just lovely. Are you the fiddler? I'd love to hear more recording from you.

OT - thanks.  I went to work for the "Bomber Plant" in 1980, and am still there.  I was friends with all those guys you mention.  I served an apprenticeship to a violin maker here in Ft. Worth 1977 - 1982, so I got to know quite a few fiddle people.

Thanks to you too, Fiddlechickaroo.  Yes, I'll admit that was me, but just barely... I'm not satisfied with it at all.  I played everything on that recording, and nothing gave me fits sound/tone wise like the fiddle parts.

Johnny, I could never quess you're from Texas by that playing (smile). That was very nice, especially liked the "steel" !  Were you using a Tele or Stat guitar ?

Hi Tim, and thanks.  I guess I'll have to record and post Dusty Miller or Limerock to 'prove' I'm a real Texan... ha!  The steel is a 1972 Sho~Bud Pro-II played through a Peavey Nashville 400.  The strings were pretty dead when I recorded this, but it's a really good sounding steel.  The guitar... are you ready for this?  It's a 1952 Telecaster played through a 1965 black face Fender Twin Reverb.

I'm struggling with mics, preamps, room acoustics, etc., because the real tonal character of my instruments just isn't coming through in the recording.  I really respect a good recording engineer (and I ain't one).  Oh, and I was playing on a pretty decent fiddle too... ;)

SWEEEEET. sweet fiddle, sweet pedal steel. Recently I've heard some pedal steelers use a more-distorted sound, which puzzled me--their sound was indistinguishable from a crunchy slide-guitar sound such as Duane Allman's, so why bother? The glory of pedal steel sound is best when untampered-with. Don't be down on the sound of your fiddling--it sounds real good to these ears.

Thanks, Jane!  Me and you be on the same page when it comes to what pedal steel is supposed to sound like.  My steel rig is way better than my ability to play it.

I'm not exactly down on the sound of my fiddling, it's the recorded sound I'm dissatisfied with.  The fiddle on that recording is a golden era Cremonese instrument.  You'd never guess that from the recording.  You ought to hear it "live".  I just haven't yet figured out a way to get it's "magic" to come through in the recording.  But, I'm still working on it.

Thanks again for your compliments and kind words.

Johnny, are you any kin to Will.  He plays mostly Gospel, but can really play the fiddle.  By the way, you play very well.

If you are kin to Will, you are kin to Benny/

Johnny:

I REALLY enjoyed your playing on this! And I especially liked your fiddle playing. I also know what you mean about the difficulty of learning recording techniques. I dealing with it too amigo!

I just moved back to Maine from Austin and this reminds me of a great country jam I used to go to. Nice steel, nice Tele, and sweet, sweet fiddle. I also play many instruments and record (layer) parts on a 8 track to CD. You're right. Recording engeneer / producing is an art in itself. If I can lend any assistance to your ongoing endevors in this realm I would be more than happy to oblige.

Love this REAL country music! I always wanted to learn steel. But right now I'm concentrating on fiddle. I hope you record some more songs for us here on the hangout!!!
