I was born and raised in NYC. As a child, I took piano lessons. My family is of Italian extraction, and as a kid I often would listen to my grandfather play the guitar and mandolin. I eventually taught myself how to play the guitar, and later got hold of a five string banjo and a copy of Pete Seeger's "How to Play the Five String Banjo" (which I think cost a whole $2) and started teaching myself banjo. I later moved to W. Lafayette IN to attend school (Purdue) and while there got introduced to bluegrass. Attended my first bluegrass festival (Beanblossom) in 1976. Later I moved to Southern CA and bought a motorcycle. Dragging the banjo or guitar on the back of my bike was not the smartest thing in the world to do, so I decided to learn how to play mandolin. Eventually, every mandolin player thinks of at least trying his/her hand at playing the fiddle, and that bug bit me pretty hard around 1999. And I have been scratching that bite ever since!
