A lot of inexpensive fiddles have a harshness to their sound. There have been a lot of discussions on how to mitigate that a little. Here's something that's worked for me.. a little... it's just a soft rubber earplug from the drugstore...

AHH-HAA....thnx fer tha info Steve...I'm off to tha
drug-store fer a big box of em. ( LOL ). I too find
under-chin playin uncomfortable to me. Chest playing has made vibrato elusive & impossible
for me, & it shore sounds good on tunes.
