The one mystery I ran into - one spot would not take the stain well at the lower left corner. I think it actually had some sort of fungal (!) growth, as there was a slightly green coloration to it after taking off the varnish. The color went away with a little sanding, but the rosewood stain did not hold. I am happy enough with no more green!
