I must have been about 5-years old when my dad snapped this shot of me with his violin. When I was born, my father had big ambitions for me becoming a great classical violinist. He ran out and bought me a pretty nice 1/8 size violin in the hopes that I'd end up in some conservatory. Sad to say, it never happened. I never touched the instrument. When I was in my late teens and just starting to come up in the Big Apple old-time scene, I got myself a cheap German factory 4/4 size fiddle. And thus I embarked on my long disreputable career as a scruffy fiddler. (Photo by Charles Pestcoe)
