Well muted fiddle

Posted 11/16/2007 3:35:00 PM

The big mute is a metal violin-viola mute. The long, skinny one is an Ultra Gold Tone banjo mute. To put the banjo mute on you have to use the other hand to resist the pushing of it onto the bridge, or the bridge will move on you; it also helps to pry it apart a little as you push it on. These two metal mutes do a great job quieting things down so that I don't wake the kids when I practice.

Are these the mutes you were talking about at conference?

Holy cow - I'm surprised either one of'em alone can't do the job. I'd never have imagined you'd need both of'em.

You must a powerful bowing arm...:-)

Being an American, I subscribe to the notion that if some is good, then more is better. It may be overkill, but it really works to keep fellow family members from getting irate at me for practicing/playing after they are in bed. I can also play at midnight in hotels with impunity.
