A couple of months ago I was in a fiddle workshop given by Billy Mathews in Urbana, Il. This A-tune was the first of 5 tunes he taught. It works pretty well on banjo, and is nice and easy on the fiddle. He told us that an apple knocker was a term for a person who picks the apples, and that there is another tune in D by the same name (different tune). I recorded the banjo first so that I wouldn't break rhythm on the fiddle.

A couple of months ago I was in a fiddle workshop given by Billy Mathews in Urbana, Il. This D-tune was the second of 5 tunes that he taught, if I remember correctly. It works out great on banjo, as well as being easy on fiddle. I still cannot be sure of making it through a tune three times on the fiddle without breaking down, so I recorded the banjo version first and then played along. I didn't like my first fiddle track, so I did a second, and then decided that I liked hearing both fiddle tracks so I left them in. It sort of cancels out the errors.

I thought it had been a while since I last uploaded something to the fiddle hangout. So here is something. Sam and Elzie was posted as a tune of the week over at the Banjo Hangout, and I thought it sounded familiar. On asking, I was reminded that the Illinois name is Crooked Road, and I had played along with it 6 days previously! I've been messing with it on the fiddle, but I had to clip out a small bit of what I had recorded to end up with something that had the minimum number of mistakes.

The title literally means --Walking Dance (or tune) from Applebo--, a village in Sweden. I understand this is one of the two most common Swedish fiddle tunes. I first heard it back in my college days, but was reminded of it by a posting on the Fiddle Hangout by Michael Springer (fiddlepogo). I worked this out by downloading his version and slowing it down to play along with. It's my current obsession tune, and it sounds OK on banjo, too.

Last week at the Indiana Fiddlers Gathering (Battle Ground) I bought the first two instalments of Billy Mathews 500 Fiddle Tunes and I've been listening to it pretty much to the exclusion of other music. This is one that grabbed me, partially because the A part was sooo much like the B part of Apple Knockers that I didn't have too much learn.

I've tried to do a little orchestra here, so I have three tracks of fiddle, and one each of guitar and mandolin.

I understand that this was collected from a fiddler in Litchfield, IL. I first heard it played by Art Lange and Chris Ptasnik at Gebhart Woods Dulcimer Festival in 2006. Since then we have played it a few times in the bi-weekly jam we have here in Springfield. It sounds like a polka to me.

This is a self-indulgent thing in which I multi-tracked myself on banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and guitar. I hope that my version of the B section is compatible, I worked it out from a recording downloaded from the Pegram Jam site, and it seemed to me that the fiddlers were doing a couple of different things.

This is from the October 23 session. We had a fairly small group, and for part of the time I was the only person with a fiddle. Here I am leading on Liberty.

I learned this from Steve Staley here in Central Illinois. I do better on the banjo, but I keep trying on fiddle.

This Billy Mathews' original is one of my favorites to play. I wish I could do it better...

Last Christmas I asked for and received a book of tunes titled Mandolin Uff-Da, Let's Dance, by Bruce Dix. I'm really enjoying it, although this is the only tune that I've attempted so far. I'm doing fiddle, mandolin, and banjo.

Colleen Heine taught this at a beginning fiddle workshop at the Gateway Dulcimer Festival.
