Clawhammer banjo tuned fCFCD. I was fooling around with the tuning, and this just fell out of the instrument. Banjo is a Chuck Lee custom walnut openback, made in Ovilla, TX, new in September 2008. (Not the one in the photo -- that's my 1980 Wildwood. In banjo terminology, does that make it pre-war?)

A fun work in progress on the Lee 11" walnut banjo. I read somewhere that this tune came along at the beginning of the transition from early minstrel style banjo to what we call clawhammer today. More info at: http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/BONS_BOX.htm I'm learning to sing it, too, but that is not ready for public consumption.

Banjo tuned gCGCD, capoed at 2nd fret for key of D. I'm told this is a version of Paddy on the Tunrpike. I found and learned it on www.parlorpickers.com at http://home.comcast.net/~wefiddle1/mp3/boys.my.moneys.all.gone.mp3. I played it an old time jam once, and someone accused it of being a Bluegrass tune. Could be, but it doesn't really matter -- does it?

An internet collaboration with Harlan Williams (harwilli55). I've added my just-acquired Bob Thornburg gourd banjo to Harlan's fiddle MP3. The gourd is tuned in open "D" (gDGBD down 2.5 tones). It's great fun to play, thumpy and mellow with a skin head, no frets, gut strings and violin friction tuners which are silky smooth and very easy to use. The gourd will be an addition to all my programs.

One of my favorites. This one contains a few bloopers, but that's life. In A Modal, on my my Chuck Lee banjo.

Capo on 2nd fret for key of G. Neat tune. I think my playing lags behind the beat a little. Can anyone else hear this, or is it just my imagination?

A work in progress (warts and all). I learned it (more or less) by playing along with an MP3 on FHO posted by Glenn (http://www.fiddlehangout.com/myhangout/home.asp?id=543). The banjo is a Chuck Lee custom, 11-inch, walnut rim, no tone ring. Banjo is tuned fCFCD, capoed at second fret for the key of G.

Another Internet collaboration with Jeff Long of Fiddle Hangout and Jackson, TN. This time I added my banjo to his fiddle/guitar track. It just so happens that I have an old Yellow Dog -- sometimes referred to as a Carolina Dog. She's 13-years-old, blind, deaf and diabetic, but still hanging in there. Update: Sadly, my old yellow dog has died. She put up a good fight, but the fight just got to be too much for her. It's in the key of D, banjo is tuned gCGCD, capoed at second fret.

Gets off to a little bit of shaky start, but seems to hold together after that.
